Animal Aid for Vermilion Area, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit serving Vermilion Parish and Cow Island, Forked Island, Pecan Island, Esther, InterCoastal City.

We're a small pet rescue group in rural SW Louisiana. We rescue, rehab, foster, adopt, educate, spay/neuter, investigate cruelty, and manage a sanctuary for abused and unwanted pets. Since Hurricane Rita, we've also run an emergency feeding program for 400 horses and over 2600 cows. In addition, scarce housing options have caused a surge in relinquished pets. People here lost everything in the storm surge: Homes, barns, tack rooms, fences… Recovery is slow. Animals and people struggle.

Humane Society of Louisiana is a 501c3 nonprofit currently caring for Katrina displaced companion animals at an emergency shelter (HSLA shelter destroyed in Katrina) in Tylertown, Mississippi.

Humane Society of Louisiana's temp shelter in Tylertown, MS is sorely understaffed! On Jan 18, just one person tended to 47 dogs and 36 cats. A camper is on-site for volunteers to sleep in. Plan to travel self-sufficient. With no sanctuary to return to in New Orleans, HSLA will be based out of Camp Katrina in Tylertown for at least the next few months. As national attention shifts away from Katrina/Rita news, our volunteer numbers have dwindled.
