Israel Bans Horse-Drawn Carts

UPDATE: No Other Nation Has Taken Its Battered Horses And Donkeys Off The Streets

11/29/12-Kinship Circle followed CHAIs (Concern For Helping Animals In Israel) lead to rally support for a ban on horse-drawn carts due to their elemental cruelty and threat to public safety. While the city of Tel Aviv announced a ban in 2009, it was rarely enforced.

Now an entire nation will clear its streets and highways of the merciless practice. CHAI reports that once the Knesset Finance Committee approves the Ministry of Transportations new regulations, a ban on horse-drawn carts goes into effect. If enforced, people will no longer see battered horses and donkeys who suffer from fatigue, dehydration, chronic hoof problems and lameness as they lug carts laden with bulky furniture, produce, or construction supplies.

And while global campaigns to end horse-drawn vehicles are underway, notably the Coalition To Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in New York, Israel will be the first to implement a countrywide ban.

"We are thrilled to see the light at the end of the tunnel in our struggle to end this terrible, outmoded phenomenon that has no place in the modern state of Israel," said Hakol Chai representative, Michal Volansky.

Dear Mayor Huldai,

Please register my support for a ban on horse-drawn carts due to their elemental cruelty and threat to public safety.

Horse- or donkey-drawn carts on congested streets endanger both pedestrians and drivers. Moreover, municipal veterinarian Zvi Galin claims Tel Aviv is deficient in resources needed to regularly inspect and remove horses from abusive owners.

A more logical solution in the 21st Century is to prohibit horse-drawn carts entirely. The image of battered, skeletal horses and donkeys navigating urban traffic is old fashioned and inhumane. These animals suffer fatigue, dehydration, chronic hoof conditions and lameness as they lug carts laden with bulky furniture, produce or construction supplies. They work without water or shade under a sweltering sun or rainstorms.

When they are too weak to stand, horses and donkeys are discarded at garbage sites or along roads to slowly die by starvation. Please ban horse- drawn vehicles all together and institute interim sanctuaries for the rehabilitation of abused animals once they've been seized.

I urge Tel Aviv to join London, Paris, Beijing, Toronto, Las Vegas, and progressive cities worldwide that already forbid the use of horses and donkeys within city limits.

Thank you for considering my opinion. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
