11/21/06: Shanghai Zoo Cancels Animal Olympics
Shanghai Wild Animal Park's fourth annual Animal Olympics is cancelled after a barrage of complaints about the spectacle that forces over 300 animals — including cheetahs, lions, tigers, bears, macaques, poodles, a Golden Monkey, a chimpanzee, a zebra, a llama and an elephant — to execute foolish and dangerous tricks against a backdrop of loud pop music.

1/7/06: University of Rochester Loses Its Live Pig Labs
Kinship Circle letter writers ask the University of Rochester School of Medicine to discontinue a course in which students operate on pigs who are destroyed at the end of the drill. The medical school upgrades to contemporary surgical simulators and other non-animal teaching tools.

11/3/06: Campbell Soup/Pace Foods Ditch The Rodeo

Kinship Circle members contact Campbell Soup as consumers, asking the company to cease its sponsorship of rodeos, via its subsidiary Pace foods. We join SHARK's (Showing Animals Respect And Kindness) crusade to get Campbell Soup/Pace Foods to break ties with the rodeo abuse industry — where handlers bully and torture domestic animals with electric prods, straps, spurs and tail twisting.

An official statement confirms: "Campbell Soup Company and Pace Foods are no longer sponsors of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA)."

10/11/06: Purrs Over Closing of Pet Cloning Company
Kinship Circle members ask Sperling's Genetic Savings & Clone to stop kitten cloning projects that prey upon vulnerable consumers grieving their lost pets. With an estimated 4 to 6 million healthy homeless animals euthanized yearly, no one needs to profit from controversial cloning experiments that also create mutilated and suffering animals. Genetic Savings & Clone, Inc., the sole company to sell cloned companion animals (at up to $50,000 per duplicate animal), closes its doors permanently.

10/10/06: Pet Evacuation & Transportation Standards Act Passes

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, as Kinship Circle joins many other animal groups in the fight to save animal lives, we also initiate letter campaigns to Congress and President Bush demanding a national disaster preparedness plan with provisions for animals.

Disaster victims should never have to choose between survival and their pets. Yet that is exactly what happened in Katrina's wake.

The images are unforgivable: A white dog is ripped from a boy's arms as he boards a bus. A bewildered yellow Lab watches his family disappear in a helicopter. An elderly woman cannot receive medical care unless she deserts her cats.

More than 50,000 Louisiana animals were stranded in Katrina's path. Numbers are unknown for Mississippi. Katrina's human death toll might have been lower if an enforced plan to accommodate animals had been in place.

Kinship Circle letters ask for passage of the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act). In 2006, President Bush signs this bill into law. States are required to help evacuate companion animals during a natural disaster or risk losing federal money.

7/19/06: University of Illinois And East Tennessee State University Evolve To Animal-Free Research

Kinship Circle supports PCRM's (Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine) continuing campaign to replace medical school animal labs with progressive non-animal teaching tools. Recent successes in response to letter/call/email campaigns include the University of Illinois and Tennessee State University - James Quillen College Of Medicine.

Both institutions vow to eliminate animal labs from their curricula. East Tennessee State University - James Quillen College of Medicine will no longer use live pigs in its third year clerkship. Instead, they'll use simulation technology available on campus.

6/27/06: In Katrina's Wake, Louisiana Pet Evacuation Law

To advocate a legal safety net for animals after Katrina's tragic loss of life, Kinship Circle's Brenda Shoss works with Louisiana Senator Fontenot's office to promote passage of Louisiana Pet Evacuation Bill SB-607. Ms. Shoss crafts letter campaigns to lawmakers, press materials...and gathers stories from evacuees forced to flee without pets.

On June 27, 2006 Governor Kathleen Blanco signs SB-607 into law. Cathy Wells, Sen. Fontenot's aide who drafted SB-607, writes: "We all know if it weren't for Kinship Circle's campaigns to legislators, this bill would not have had the success it did..."

A New Orleans resident and Katrina survivor, Lisa Roussel, writes: "Without Kinship Circle and the many alerts concerning SB-607, we would never have been able to pull this off! The "dirty politicians" LA is known for would never have paid a second's notice to this bill. But because Kinship Circle kept us on top of things and provided us with legislators' contact info, urged us to bombard them with emails and calls, and kept us updated on a daily basis, YOU played a MAJOR role in getting Louisiana's Pet Evacuation Bill passed. I cannot thank you enough."

6/8/06: Polo Ralph Lauren Cuts Fur From Collection

Kinship Circle targets top retailers/designers that sell fur and fur trim. We remind recipients about the cruelty inherent in the fur trade, including genital electrocution, neck popping, poison injections, asphyxiation by carbon monoxide, steel-jaw leghold traps, etc. We welcome Polo Ralph Lauren's decision to eliminate fur from all its apparel and home collections.

6/2/06: Gov. Vetoes Bill To Class Pup Mill Dogs As Products

Letters from around the nation and world ask Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack to oppose any provisions that classify dogs as "farm products." We commend Governor Vilsack for his veto of language to categorize "canines from licensed facilities" as "agricultural products," thereby legitimizing puppy mills. These profit-driven breeding factories typically fail to provide proper veterinary care, diet, exercise or shelter. Large sites house up to 1,000 dogs in rusted chicken wire cages heaped three or four tiers high. Urine and feces seep into lower cages. Dogs at the top swelter in the summer and freeze in the winter.

Letters to the Brooklyn DA request the maximum two-year jail sentence for Alan Decosta — who in a fit of jealous rage, hurled his mother's dog Genesis, a sweet brown and white pit bull mix, out a fifth-floor window of their apartment in Crown Heights. Decosta pleads guilty at his trial is sentenced to the full two-year incarceration allowed by New York law.

Financiers / Customers / Suppliers Dump Huntingdon Life Sciences. When Will This Cruel Lab Go Away?

9/9/08: Merck KGaA, a global pharmaceutical giant, "has no plans to be an HLS customer in the future."

7/30/08: Raymond James/Eagle Asset Management and Old Mutual (Acadian Asset Management) sell off more than 1.5 million HLS/LSR shares within one month. Once investors learn about the research laboratory that kills an average 500 animals daily for experiments "only reliable 5-25% of the time," most get rid of their shares in LSRI (Life Science Research - Huntingdon Life Sciences).

4/08: Pakistan International Airways statement: "We undertake we shall not involve ourselves in the transportation of animals worldwide for testing purposes, as an ethical policy," Salah Uddin, Director. PIA had been involved in transport of beagles for research at HLS.

4/9/08: YorPower statement: "I can confirm that neither Yorpower, Power Plant Services nor our sister company Techknol Power Generation perform any work on behalf of Huntingdon Life Sciences and the current management have no plans for future dealings with them." Guy Phoenix, Director YorPower

12/20/07: Transamerica Investment, Frontier Capital, SAC Capital, AXA, Wachovia, Alternative Investment Partners and Rathbone Brothers join the global list of customers, suppliers, and financiers that severed ties with HLS after learning about the laboratory's habitual falsification of data and animal cruelty.

11/20/07: Wachovia sells all its shares HLS/LSRI, a contract research laboratory cited for animal cruelty in six undercover investigations...including footage of HLS technicians who kill dogs by flooding their lungs with toxic materials meant for the animals' stomachs. In one video clip, a technician repeatedly punches a screaming 4-month-old beagle in the face. During a supposedly post-mortem dissection, another tech slices into the chest of a convulsing monkey.

10/1/07: Paul Moravek, owner/vice-president, Moravek Biochemicals, supplier of radioactive chemicals to Huntingdon, states his company will cease business with HLS.

9/20/07: BNP Paribas, Huntingdon's largest shareholder, sells all shares in HLS.

2/7/07: HLS customer Surface Logix issues a statement that they'll never again work with HLS...after receiving hundreds of emails, calls and letters due to action alerts. HLS notes decline in U.S. revenue.

4/26/06: HLS is dropped off the Pink Sheets after its sole market maker at the time, The Vertical Group, follows Seaboard in ditching the notoriously cruel animal research lab. "To whom it may concern: Please be advised that as of 4/26/06 The Vertical Group has dropped making a market in LSRI. Sincerely, The Vertical Group"
