KINSHIP CIRCLE UPDATES: January - April 2006
Dear Kinship Circle Subscribers: Since our early involvement in Gulf Coast animal rescue as Grassroots Effort for Animals of the Storm...to our role in Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) with Jane Garrison, David Meyer and Pia Salk...we have remained an active source of news and needs for animals in disaster. In fact, we have developed an entirely separate mail group called: KINSHIP CIRCLE Animal Disaster Relief List. With hurricane season 2006 around the corner, we'll continue to post info about last year's storms as well as any new animal disaster relief news that may arise. If not subscribed, you may join KINSHIP CIRCLE Animal Disaster Relief List any time. To subscribe, email info@kinshipcircle.org or kinshipcircle@brick.net In your email, please state: · SUBSCRIBE TO KC ANIMAL DISASTER RELIEF LIST · IF YOU ARE A RESIDENT OF LOUISIANA OR MISSISSIPPI PLEASE NOTE: KC Animal Disaster Relief List is entirely separate from Kinship Circle's primary list (which you are already subscribed to). Occasionally, there is overlap between the two lists. When this happens, we ask that you kindly delete any duplicate alerts. Check out our ongoing work in animal disaster relief here. On a personal note, we welcomed a new puppy, Mandy, into our home on Saturday, April 29. She is a Lhasa Apso baby, born Feb. 25 and rescued from a Missouri puppy mill. As many of you know, we lost Stanley (also a Lhasa) on December 27, 2005. Mandy is gorgeous, but within her first few days with us, refused to eat and became lethargic. By Tuesday, we received the dreaded diagnosis of parvo--a deadly virus commonly spread in puppy mills. She is hospitalized on intensive parvo treatment as I write. As of 6:30am today, Mandy may have made a 180-degree turnaround. She willingly ate her first bowl of kibble. The Animal Emergency Clinic reported she is gnawing on her cage and yelping so loudly they can hear her on the second floor. If she does not relapse today, I will bring her home tonight. She may not be out of the woods yet, but the mantra around our home is: Long Live Mandy!

Louisiana State Bill SB-607 (The Pet Evacuation Act) and federal bills S. 2548 & H.R. 3858 (The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act) are still pending. Both bills empower government agencies (at state and federal levels) to provide for the safe evacuation of animals during disaster. This plan is updated and includes an evacuation plan for pets. So everyone who has pets, and their owners... We'll do everything in our power to make sure that you can evacuate your pets safely and they can go with you in the event of an evacuation. The only caveat is that you will have to have a cage--a cage for your pets to be transported in. So as long as you have something to put them in, they can come with you..." Back to top 2. Huntingdon Life Sciences Update Kinship Circle: [ongoing] Target HLS Supplier, Customers, Financiers Campaign SOURCE: http://www.shac.net/ARCHIVES/2006/April/28.html 4/26/06--INCREDIBLE NEWS: VERTICAL DROP HLS AND OFF THE PINK SHEETS GO HLS Today HLS (LSRI) were dropped off the Pink Sheets after their sole Market Maker Vertical dropped out after Seaboard dropped out last week (see statement below). This is without doubt Huntingdon's lowest trading point and to say that the last 7 months have been a financial disaster for HLS is an understatement. In that time they have gone from 45 minutes away from trading on the NYSE, being dropped off the OTCBB (Over the Counter Bulletin Board) on to the Pink Sheets and now they have been dropped off the Pink Sheets. As we write this it looks like shares in HLS (LSRI) are not trading anywhere in whole world. Like we say the more HLS crave normality the more abnormal things become for them. A big thanks to those who have taken part in financial demos in the US & UK and anyone who taken part in the email action alerts. It works! To whom it may concern: Please be advised that as of 4/26/06 The Vertical Group has dropped making a market in LSRI. Sincerely, The Vertical Group SOURCE: http://www.shac.net/FINANCIAL/update.html HLS's Final Quarter Results 2005 - Huntingdon's revenues (sales) were down to $40,020 million from the third quarter sales of $43,758 million, seeing a drop of nearly three and three quarters of a million dollars off their sales. This saw them make a $520,000 loss on the last quarter and the share dividend down massively from a net income per share of $1.07 to a net loss per share of $0.04. Cash at hand more than halved from $33,341 million to $15,420 million. In the last 8 months HLS have seen their share price drop by a whopping $10 a share and their sales have dropped by nearly $5 million. Also over that period they have been forced to sell their labs which they now rent at $5 million per year and their new refinancing sees an increase in interest with penalty clauses that sees them pay out $200,000 every month. The last 8 months have seen HLS go from 45 minutes from listing on the NYSE to being bounced off the OTCBB onto the Pink Sheets where their share price continues to slide. To cap it all of their one and only Market Maker, Legacy who had stuck by them for 3 years and in the whole of that time were the only ones prepared to register permanently as HLS's Market Maker ...You guessed it! They resigned 2 months ago. Huntingdon are down but not out so we all need to redouble our efforts and you will see through this website a further refocusing of the SHAC campaign that will hurt the killers at HLS even more... NY Dog Killer Gets Maximum Two Years In Jail Kinship Circle: 11/18/05--Jealous Man Flings Dog To Her Death CASE - November, 2005: In a fit of jealous rage, Alan Decosta hurled his mother's dog Genesis, a sweet brown and white pit bull mix, out a fifth-floor window of their apartment in Crown Heights. Decosta's disproportionate rage stemmed from the notion his mother, Sonia Reyes, wanted to hand his cereal bowl over to Gemini, who was asleep at the time. Wielding a vacuum cleaner, he beat the 52-year-old woman before throwing her dog out a living room window. When Reyes reached her beloved dog in the street, he was coughing up fluids. Genesis dyed in her arms... He refused any mental heath intervention so he will be in prison. He will be sentenced shortly (I don't have the exact date) but the case is over. Back to top 4. All Sponsors Dump Celebrity Circus TV Show Kinship Circle: 3/27/06--Bad-Taste TV: Celebrity Circus SOURCE: Miguel Moutinho, miguel.moutinho@animal.org.pt edited for length 4/24/06 - Celebrity Circus Loses All Its Sponsors - Following one month of Defenders International, participated by many thousands of people in Portugal and from all over the world, as well as by animal protection organisations from many different countries, Credial, the Portuguese branch of BNP Paribas, finally dropped its sponsorship to the Endemol's shameful "Celebrity Circus" TV reality show. The pharmaceutical company Bayer appeared immediately as the next sponsor, but also targeted immediately by ANIMAL with e-mails and letters asking the company to refrain from sponsoring this stupid show, Bayer's sponsorship did not last more than two days. Since last Wednesday, Endemol's "Celebrity Circus" lost all its sponsors and should last its final two weeks without any sponsor, said a TVI public relations officer... Back to top 5. Sean writes: Thanks to the campaign we have all been waging on behalf of these orangutans, the CITES officials of Thailand have at last publicly agreed to send the orangutans home... On 21-23 April the Thai CITES officials meet their counterparts from Malaysia and Indonesia in Bangkok to discuss the orangutans. This Tuesday I leave to join colleagues in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, to hold Press Conferences calling for the immediate return of the orangutans illegally held in both Thailand and Malaysia. I will be joined by conservationists from each country. Thank you yet again for all your help and encouragement. A lot of people sending these messages have made a big difference - it is approaching three years (approx. 1000 days) since the orangutans were discovered in Thailand. In a little over three months 'people power' has achieved a great deal and together we will save these orangutans. Many thanks, Sean Whyte, Coordinator "Born To Be Wild" Campaign From the Bangkok Post: Orangutans to return to Indonesia - After two years of investigation and DNA testing, 54 orangutans that were forced to entertain tourists at a private zoo in Bangkok suburb, will eventually be returned to their homeland in the Indonesian jungle. Schwann Tunhikorn, deputy director-general of the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, said recent DNA tests by Kasetsart University veterinarian confirmed 54 of the 100 apes forestry police seized from Safari World in 2004 belonged to Indonesia. Safari World zoo's managing director Pin Kewkacha also admitted that the zoo illegally obtained the endangered apes from Borneo and Sumatra islands. But a public prosecutor had yet to lodge a charge against him, said Mr. Schwann. ''The decision [to return the orangutans to Indonesia] reflects Thailand's responsibility as a member of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites), which aims to crack down on the cross-border illegal wildlife trade,'' he said. The decision was based on the DNA testing and discussions with Cites officers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand as well as wildlife experts, he added. Edwin Wiek, the Thai representative of Indonesia's Borneo Orangutan Foundation, slammed the department for dragging its feet in investigating the case and bringing the wildlife smugglers to justice... SHAC 7 Update Kinship Circle: 3/4/06--SHAC 7 VERDICT: Guilty & Jailed For Opposing HLS SOURCE: Updates@shac7.com, http://www.shac7.com/updates.htm On March 2 my friends and colleagues of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC-USA) were found guilty on all counts in a case that tested the validity of First Amendment rights and our freedom, as activists, to utilize the internet as a platform for dissent. Kinship Circle strongly supports legal protest against Huntingdon Life Sciences. The SHAC 7 are currently out of jail, with sentencing tentatively scheduled for June 13, 2006. 4/19/06--It has been a while since our last update. As you all likely know, all of the defendants have been released to the homes of family members on house arrest pending sentencing in June. This gives them time to get their affairs in order and continue to reach out to friends and supports to raise funds for appeals attorneys. Right now, there are a few things happening. The sentencing date has been changed (see below), cities all over the country are organizing fundraiser benefits for the SHAC 7, and we are asking for even more cities to organize events to help raise the much needed money for appeals attorneys. We need to raise tens of thousands of dollars still to pay the mounting legal bills for the appeal. Please donate if you can! We understand the surgery department will no longer use live pigs in its third-year clerkship. Instead, they'll use simulation technology available at their campus. This brings the count down to 19 (of 125) medical schools that still maintain live animal labs. Back to top 8. Animal Asia's Ambassador Bear, Andrew, Dies Kinship Circle: 5/30/05--Endless Despair For China's Farmed Bears Kinship Circle: 5/30/05--Make Bear Protection Act A Priority SOURCE: moongazermagick@yahoo.co.uk Animals Asia Foundation http://www.animalsasia.org edited for length 2/10/06 - Sad News from Animals Asia - "For those of you who have shared our special moments with the bears over the years, I'm so sorry to pass on the sad, sad news that we said goodbye to our number one ambassador, three-legged Andrew, (Anderloo as he is named in Chinese), yesterday afternoon. Early yesterday morning, following a month of eating less and sleeping more, Andrew had a health check and ultrasound which revealed that something was horribly wrong. Our Vets, Kati and Phill, began abdominal surgery and found the most aggressive and ugly cancer I have ever seen in my life. The removed tumour, weighing 7.3kgs surpassed anything we have seen before and, because the liver was so terribly affected (with approximately 5% of its normal function remaining), Andrew's blood wasn't able to clot and he had been slowly bleeding to death... No words can ever explain the grief everyone here is feeling - we cremated and buried our mighty Andrew at 6pm last evening, with local TV camera's and the San Francisco Chronicle recording another chapter in bear farming history - an outpouring of anger and sadness which is difficult to describe even now, but which united everyone here in the conviction and determination that Andrew will never die in vain... Someone wrote today: "You are not weaker without Andrew, you are stronger because of him." And we are. R.I.P. Anderloo, we love you. Roxi's Killer Gets Jail Time To Reflect On His Crime Kinship Circle: 8/5/05--Justice For Beloved Dog Kicked To Death SOURCE: Lisa Sampson, lisa@rememberroxi.com http://www.northcountynews.com/view.asp?s=1-18-06/news5.htm Dear Brenda, Frank Aquino was sentenced for the crime of animal cruelty today. He received intermittent jail time (weekends from 1/13 to 3/12), a $1,000 fine, 50 hours of community service, counseling and 3 years probation. In addition, he was ordered to pay us restitution for adopting a new dog. We are taking some comfort in knowing that Aquino is spending weekends in jail with plenty of time to think about what he has done. ÊI believe he'll think twice before he takes his aggressions out on an animal again. Hopefully, it will be some deterrent to other abusers out there as well. Thanks so much for everything! Lisa edited for length 1/25/06 - Man who killed dog with kick sent to jail / by Rick Pezzullo - - Calling the kicking death of a deaf 15-year-dog "callous and horribly cruel," a Putnam Valley justice imposed a prison sentence last week for the 41-year-old man who pled guilty to the ultimate act of animal cruelty. Frank Aquino spent his first of nine consecutive weekends in Putnam County jail last Friday night after receiving his punishment the day before from Putnam Valley Justice Louis DiCarlo. Besides prison time, the United Parcel Service employee was fined $1,165, ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and undergo a mental health evaluation, and received three years probation. Aquino, who was arrested June 5 for kicking Roxi, a 45-pound mixed-breed German shepherd "like a football" in the abdomen on Memorial Day, was also required to pay $500 to Roxi's owners, Bill and Lisa Sampson, to cover the expenses of adopting a new dog. "It's sad. There's really no reason for it," Lisa Sampson said Monday from her Somerset Lane home about Aquino's actions. "We're just glad that he didn't walk away with nothing at all with what he did." On May 30 at about 4:15 p.m., Alfred Pizzuto, who was visiting Aquino, reported to the Putnam County Sheriff's Department that he saw Roxi tumble several times from the force of a quick kick from Aquino after the dog wandered onto his property. About two hours later, Lisa Sampson found the pet she had since it was a puppy lying dead in bushes across the street from her home. It wasn't until four days later that the Sampsons learned the circumstances that led to Roxi's death. "She was very gentle, a very docile animal," Lisa Sampson said. "He (Aquino) just doesn't like animals. Maybe he has aggression problems." ...On October 1, the Sampsons adopted a six-month-old puppy named Chance who was left homeless from Hurricane Katrina. "Chance is a good dog and is wonderful with our baby (son), Dylan," Lisa Sampson wrote on a web site entitled http://www.rememberroxi.com. "He is very different from Roxi. I knew he would be, but in a strange way it makes me miss her more. I guess it is because Roxi and I had a history together, a life together. I knew her every quirk and she knew mine. Sometimes I think I hear the tags rattle on her collar and I turn my head to look for her, but she isn't there..." Back to top 10. LA Dogfight Thugs Are Charged Kinship Circle: 1/18/06--Justice Lags In Bust Of LA Dogfighting Dynasty SOURCE: Judie Mancuso, judie@greeni.net 1/20/06 - Floyd and Guy Boudreaux, Louisiana dogfighters finally charged due to public outcry. To Everyone Who Took Action to Our Plea: Here is an update on the Boudeaux family of felons. Tuesday around 4pm a plea was sent to the public regarding Floyd and Guy Boudreaux, who were busted in March 11, 2005 for felony counts of dogfighting and animal cruelty. The Lafayette, Louisiana District Attorney's office has allowed them to walk and had not yet filed charges 10 months after the bust (hmmm). However, within 24 hours of Tuesday's email the DA announced they would be prosecuting. Your calls and letters made the difference! Here is an excerpt from an email Laura Maloney, Executive Director of LASPCA sent on Wednesday: "Floyd Boudreaux is being charged with 48 counts of dog fighting, two counts possession of schedule III drugs. Guy Boudreaux is being charged as principal to 48 counts of dog fighting. No trial date has been set. Please extend my deepest gratitude for all of those who wrote or called the DA. Their voice made the difference!!!! Thanks so much for your help!! " Another excerpt: "He is also a champion cockfighter, but sadly, cockfighting is legal in LA. We were unable to seize his birds. We're going to shoot for outlawing cockfighting this upcoming legislative session."
