spacer UPDATE: Alamogordo Chimps Get Hiatus From Painful Experiments
DEC 21, 2011 - About 200 chimpanzees at a New Mexico nonresearch site won’t go to a Texas lab for experimentation. The chimps (some lifelong lab inmates) remain at Alamogordo Primate Facility indefinitely. An NIH pardon unfolded just hours after a breakthrough report revealed chimps as unnecessary for human HIV vaccine, hepatitis C antiviral drugs, etc… FULL UPDATE

spacer PROGRESS: Landmark Study Stirs Freeze On Chimp Experiments
DEC 2011 - They are like us, yet not enough to cure us. The Institute of Medicine agrees. Sort of. New findings say researchers can no longer warrant invasive chimpanzee medical experiments. IOM calls for stern limits, with chimps as a last option when research — i.e., animals artifically induced with human disease, poisoned on test drugs — is not viable in other human or nonhuman animals… FULL UPDATE

OCT 14, 2011 - A monkey is dosed with a drug to mimic nerve gas attack. He seizes. Oozes bodily fluids. He is in respiratory failure…The U.S. Army intends to end monkey use in ghastly chemical weapons drills, as confirmed by Dept. of Defense to Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, who opposes monkeys as training "tools" for human nerve gas exposure… FULL UPDATE

spacer WIN! Puerto Rico Boots Bioculture Monkey Breeders-For-Research
OCT 11, 2011 - Good job to Kinship Circle advocates who fought to keep Bioculture’s breeding-for-research farm out of Puerto Rico. A Court of Appeals has ruled the firm to not proceed with construction, saving thousands of monkeys from confinement, pain, death. We’ll call for action if new developments arise… FULL UPDATE

spacer WIN! Live Animal Trauma Labs Completely Gone In Canada
OCT 2011 - The last two Canadian universities to go animal-free for trauma training mark an end to live labs nationwide. The University of Sherbrooke in Quebec and Sacre Coeur Hosptial in Montreal won’t use dogs or pigs to teach trauma care such as incision, drainage, intubation, etc. Instead, their ATLS syllabus features human-patient simulators… FULL UPDATE

In a rare win for "research animals," a grand jury indicted 4 PLRS workers on 14 felony animal cruelty charges… FULL UPDATE

spacer JUSTICE: Man Who Stole Karley’s Life Denied Probation Release
JUN 16, 2011 - When retired L.A. County assistant fire chief Glynn Johnson smashed Karley’s head in with a rock, he underestimated the 6-month old puppy’s right to exist. He also never imagined the fury of animal advocates seeking justice for her stolen life. At a 2011 hearing, Johnson tried to cut short a 3-year probation term, after 90 days in jail… FULL UPDATE

spacer WIN! Vendors Pedaling "Live Goods" Are Banned From Market
MAY 2011 - Authorities did nothing for decades, as birds were confined without water or shade, squashed upside down in closed bags, thrown to the ground from trucks, and crushed inside teeny cages.
