UPDATE: Justice Un-served: Dog Handler Mary Wild Walks 7/1/10, SUMMARY: She was charged with 8 counts of animal abuse, each a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both. But in the end, dog handler Mary Wild — found guilty on 6/4/10 for the deaths of 7 “show dogs” left in her overheated van in Arnold, MO — walked away with two years' probation and 80 hours community service at Jefferson County Animal Control. She is also assigned a 750-word essay on heat affects on dogs and how she could have prevented the deaths... Mary left eight dogs in her cargo van where temperatures soared to 120 degrees. Seven dogs succumbed to slow death, likely heatstroke, while Wild slept comfortably. THE AUTOMATED LETTER CAMPAIGN BELOW IS NOW CLOSED. • Prosecutor to weigh case soon in deaths of 7 show dogs • Seven show dogs die after handler leaves them in hot van • Missouri Animal Cruelty Laws ![]() Among other dogs, three golden retrievers, a Dalmatian, a Siberian Husky, and a Malamute were confined in Wild's cargo van where temperatures reached 120 degrees. I understand Wild is charged with eight counts of animal cruelty, though her trial has been postponed several times. As you know, Wild was hired to supervise and transport eight dogs to and from an Iowa dog show the weekend of 6/20/09. At the very least, she neglected to provide heat relief in the a.m. hours of June 22. She kept all eight dogs in her cargo van where temperatures soared to 120 degrees. The dogs succumbed to slow death, likely heatstroke, while Wild slept comfortably indoors. This tragedy was no accident. Rather than move the dogs into a ventilated, cool area, Wild let them roast in portable kennels inside the van. If it's too hot to unload dogs, as Wild later told police, than it's too hot NOT to. As defined under Missouri animal abuse law, Wild "recklessly caused injury or suffering to an animal." I urge you to seek maximum penalties, including imprisonment and fine. If found guilty, Wild should reimburse veterinary and carcass disposal costs. In light of the multiple deaths, Wild ought to incur full punition and be barred from possessing or working with animals. I am appalled Wild has not been banned from handling dogs or held accountable for her crimes. Animals feel the excruciating pain of heatstroke no differently than humans. Seven beautiful dogs were very much alive until Mary Wild's selfish act of cruelty killed them. Thank you, |
