Honorable Officials:,
I am shocked to learn that despite a 1986 ban under European law, the Valencian government still condones the barbaric tradition of parany.
During this annual hunt for tordos (thrushes), the killers coat tree branches in glue. When unsuspecting birds descend to settle in the trees, their delicate feet adhere to the deadly limbs—causing immense physical and psychological torment. As they struggle to escape, hunters tear them from the branches to fatally beat them with racket-like instruments.
In addition to songbirds, owls and other avian species—including some federally protected species—fall victim to this depraved “custom.” Heritage, culture, entertainment, art and religion never justify outright torture. Parany has no place in contemporary society.
In fact, the European Commission has officially warned Valencian authorities to recognize European law and may implement economic sanctions if the hunts continue. Please subscribe to the cultural and legal doctrines that shape the civilized world.
I will not tour or otherwise support any country that sanctions the senseless brutalization of animals. I will advise family, friends and colleagues to join me in a boycott of Spanish tourism and commerce until this cruel hunt for songbirds is outlawed.
Sincerely,
