This report reflects information Kinship Circle has as of October 3, 2009 — and how you can support animal response teams in the Philippines, Indonesia and Samoa.

1. Six Countries Hit, Millions Displaced In Asia-Pacific
A convergence of natural disasters has left millions of people in distress across Asia and the Pacific. Since 9/26/09, a total of six countries have been hit by flooding, a typhoon, a tsunami and earthquakes.

PHILIPPINES: TROPICAL STORM ONDOY
• Worst flooding in 40 years. Parts of Manila under six feet of water. Hundreds of thousands of people in evacuation centers.
• The Philippines — with Viet Nam, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Cambodia — are bracing for Tropical Storm
   Parma.
• Government of the Philippines is soliciting international aid.

SAMOA AND TONGA: TSUNAMI
• Massive underwater earthquake in South Pacific
triggered a series of tsunamis that swept coastal villages
   in Samoan Islands.
• On some islands, all medical facilities were lost along
   with water supplies.
INDONESIA: EARHQUAKES
• In Western Sumatra, Indonesia, a 9/30/09 earthquake of 7.6 magnitude. On 10/1/09, a second, slightly smaller quake.
• Hundreds dead. Number expected to rise as bodies removed from rubble.
• Tens of thousands have been displaced.
• Indonesian Government has issued a request for international aid.

ON THE GROUND 9/30/09:
Battered by Typhoon Ketsana on 9/26/09, the Philippine capital Manila has suffered massive flooding, with over 200 deaths and displacement of thousands of people and animals. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is racing to help families and pets, while struggling themselves...

After two days trapped inside without food, PAWS directors Heidi Guzon and Gwen Protasio, and 60 rescued animals under their care, made it to safety. The head of PAWS Disaster Relief Team, May Felix, lost one of her own dogs when her house was hit by flash flooding. The undamaged PAWS shelter is functioning without electricity as an evacuation centre for animals. Since PAWS is very close to Marikina, where thousands are stranded in homes with animals — tents, cages, cat/dog food and batteries are urgently needed.

9/28/09, PARC (PHILIPPINES ANIMALS WELFARE SOCIETY):
PARC and its shelter animals remain safe from the floods caused by Typhoon Ondoy. Surrounding areas are not so lucky... PARC is opening its doors to dog and cat evacuees of the floods... Some of our volunteers are still stranded in their homes. We ask for your prayers for them. SOURCE: PAWS

AWC is heading the rescue team for stricken areas in the Philippines, working with IFAW's Emergency Water Rescue Team. You can follow news about their needs and action to save animals on AWC's Facebook page.

10/2/09, ON THE GROUND:
Report from Michael Booth, IFAW ER responder and communications officer in Philippines — International Fund for Animal Welfare had been asked by a coalition of animal welfare groups and the local government to assist with water animal rescues following the devastating Typhoon Ketsana (aka Ondoy) that flooded huge areas of Manila and surrounding districts. Our team landed at the Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 3:50am on Oct. 1st.

After one of many meetings (with Animal Welfare Coalition and Dept. of Agriculture), IFAW's team split to reach mud-covered Marikina and underwater Pasig. I headed for the water with Best Friends Rapid Response manager Rich Crook who joined IFAW's team.

We teamed up with PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society)...and after coordination with officials from the Philippine Army, Navy and Military, we set off on military trucks, then by boat and on foot to areas chest-high in water — where humans and animals were isolated. That first day we helped many struggling animals by providing food, water and medication and took two of them back with us for extended care at the animal shelter. On 10/2/09 we rescued stranded dogs on rooftops or mud-bogged islands and continued our assessment of rural areas. Still, challenging moments lay ahead. As I write, Typhoon Parma is making landfall in the North. On its heels another potential

INDONESIA:
We’re saddened by the loss of life in the Indonesia earthquake. [Best Friends has] been in contact with ProFauna Indonesia, and they’ll do everything possible to help animals in this disaster. However, it’s a logistically difficult situation. Padang, in Sumatra where the earthquake struck, lies 400 miles to the west of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Travel to that region is complicated by earthquake damage itself and the congestion of relief teams. Please keep animals in Sumatra in your thoughts and prayers. 4. WSPA Sends 3 Veterinarian-Led Response Teams
WSPA USA, 800-883-9772, www.wspa-usa.org
Lincoln Plaza, 89 South Street, Ste 201 / Boston, MA 02111

WPSA has deployed three veterinarian-led Disaster Assessment and Response Teams (DART) to bring aid to the thousands of animal victims left helpless after tragedy struck the Philippines, Samoa and Indonesia.

THE PHILIPPINES:
Ravaged by recent storms, the Philippines now braces for Cyclone Parma — expected to hit as either a category 4 or 5 (super-cyclone) storm. WSPA is working with our member society PAWS to provide emergency shelter, food and care for thousands of companion animals left homeless.

SAMOA:
After a deadly tsunami wiped out entire villages and killed more than 100 people WSPA deployed a DART to the islands. Led by Disaster Management Veterinarian Dr. Juan Carlos Murillo, the team will ascertain the tsunami's impact on the island's animals as well as treat animal victims.

INDONESIA:
Two powerful earthquakes rippled across the island of Sumatra, creating widespread destruction. WSPA has deployed a DART to assess animal welfare needs; we hope to have a clearer picture in the coming days.

5. Humane Society International Joins Effort To Save Animals

A man holds up a puppy. PHOTO: HSI staff with little rescuee. ©John Peaveler. On 9/26/09, Typhoon Ketsana struck the Philippines, followed by Typhoon Parma. HSI sent funds to help purchase rescue/sheltering equipment, and our disaster response team joined ground efforts to save animals affected by storms and floodwaters.

10/2/09 REPORT FROM HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL:
The team headed north to a shelter — that housed over 400 dogs from dog meat seizures — rumored to be badly damaged.

Once there, they found the situation better than feared...so spent time discussing improvements and ideas for adoption and education... Next, they traveled to a village where residents wanted help for animals... HSI’s Kelly Coladarci describes the scene:

As we moved down the flooded street, flanked on both sides by all manner of improvised boats and rafts, we were constantly hailed by happy Filipinos wanting to say hello, ask our names, and get their pictures taken. We slowly made our way from house to house, animal to animal, assessing the needs of each animal and asking people what animal related aid would help them...”

Eventually, the team found their way to an area with many animals... On one roof, at least seven dogs lived communally with several cats, in a strangely tolerant state of affairs for semi-feral creatures. The disaster responders left cans of food there and at a nearby minibus where several dogs were hiding out. Elsewhere, residents turned down offers to take animals to our shelter, saying they would continue to care for their neighbors’ pets...

Our group visited one woman with eight dogs, three of whom were mothers nursing a total of 20 puppies. Three were injured, and disease prevention was a concern for all. The team plans to return with supplies and veterinary care. The plan next is to acquire rabies vaccine, food packs, medications, and other aid materials, as well as official permission to continue our operations.
