1. 600 Evacuated Animals Return To Their Flood-Damaged Shelter
8/4/09, Shelter flooded, some animals drown

8/6/09 - PRESENT SITUATION/NOTES:

Yesterday we alerted you to 8/4/09 floods that drowned 10 kittens and one dog in their cages at Louisville Metro Animal Services Shelter in Kentucky. Metro Director Giles Meloche, his staff and volunteers rescued and transferred about 250 dogs and 300 cats to temporary housing at Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center.

Today, we’ve learned that all of displaced animals are returning to the flood-damaged shelter. Our Metro Animal Shelter contact reports: “We no longer need volunteers at the fairgrounds as we are moving animals back to the shelter. However, we do need clean-up help at the shelter.” We suspect traumatized animals may also need gentle voices and loving hands.

8/4/09 - 8/5/09 - THE EVACUATION OF NEARLY 600 FLOOD TRAUMATIZED ANIMALS
Flooding drowned 10 kittens and one dog in their cages at Louisville Metro Animal Services shelter 8/4/09. Director Giles Meloche led an effort to rescue animals and then supervised the transfer of about 250 dogs and 300 cats from the shelter to temporary housing at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. [NO animals remain at the water-soaked shelter].

"The water came up so fast," Meloche said. "It went from three inches to three feet in about 30 minutes." Capt. Wayne Zelinsky, an officer with Animal Services, said about 20 people worked frantically to save the animals as the water rose.

"By the time we got to the (second) building, the dogs' heads were the only thing above water," Zelinsky said. Meloche said kittens who drowned were on the floor and couldn't climb above rising water, as their mother did. He said he wasn't sure of circumstances surrounding the dog's drowning. The dog was found dead. Spokeswoman Jackie Gulbe said it is unclear when they can be returned to the shelter.
