PICHER, OKLAHOMA: Town of 800. One of worst-hit, with seven dead and 150 more injured. Tornado struck 5/10/08, destroying 20-block area. Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry ordered National Guard troops to arrive on 5/11/08 to help with rescue and recovery efforts. Homes blown off foundations... People wandering streets in a daze... GEORGIA: By Sunday (5/11) afternoon, Georgia Power officials said about 72,000 residents were without electricity across the state, mostly concentrated in the metro Atlanta area and the Macon area.
DUBLIN, GEORGIA: On 5/11/08, storms rumbled across Georgia, killing at least two people in Dublin, about 120 miles southeast of Atlanta (Laurens County). KITE, GEORGIA: The small town of Kite was destroyed by the storm, said Caroline Pope, a spokeswoman for the Johnson County Sheriff's Department. Close to 1,000 people live in the community, she said. 2. Missouri: Scared Animals Begin To Emerge From The Debris JOPLIN HUMANE SOCIETY AIDS TORNADO ANIMAL VICTIMS: Joplin Humane Society is the nearest local facility for Seneca, MO tornado victims. Shelter staff in Joplin are conducting rescue work. Many animals have been found dead. Surviving animals are just now coming out of hiding. Storms are expected to strike this area again, tonight (5/13).
