1. Hurricane Dean Update 8/20/07, from capron@pets911.org — Today (Monday) at 5pm EDT a very dangerous hurricane Dean was heading for the Yucatan Peninsula with sustained winds of 150 mph and gusts to 175 mph. There is little doubt that it will reach cat 5 status before making landfall, That's strong enough wind to sheer the heads of steel bolts. See Leroy's (ABC NIGHTline) comments: www.pets911.org/emergency/index.html Dean slammed through Jamaica causing 8 deaths and at least 150 homes demolished. Flood waters are everywhere. We have been trying all day to reach the 2 Animal Shelters with no luck. We hope to get through tomorrow. Dean is dumping 10 to 20 inched of rain wherever it goes so we can expect reports of stranded horses and cattle. If Dean continues on this track, LA, MS, and Florida can heave a great sigh of relief. It could have been different. When you see the pictures of the damage caused by this monster, just consider that it could have been your neighborhood. That should be enough incentive for all of us to make very, very sure that we are prepared for the worst. The animals depend on us. 2. Break From Dean Is Louisiana’s Chance
To Prepare 8/21/07, from tundraleap@msn.com — Dean gave us a break and an opportunity to become more prepared. Our Pet Evacuation Bill is only as good as we make it — and we need volunteers. Another Baton Rouge training session has been scheduled for this Sunday, as well as an actual on-site evacuation exercise in Jefferson parish on Friday (info below.) LSART PET EVACUATION VOLUNTEER MEETING/TRAINING: • Volunteers should check in at the police desk in the main entrance
(by the sign and flagpole - not the clinic entrance).
ADDITIONAL TRAINING: (not mandatory) On-site pet evacuation exercise at one of the Parish Pick-up Points, in Jefferson Parish. This will occur on Friday a.m., Aug. 24. This is the best training you will get, with volunteer evacuees pretending to arrive with pets. Let me know if you are interested in attending this exercise and I'll send you more details. Keep checking in with www.lsart.org for current information on actual evacuations and deployment. If you are a registered volunteer and evacuations are pending but you have not been contacted, please contact me at lsartvolunteer@gmail.com and/or tundraleap@msn.com CONTACT PAM LEAVY TO RSVP & REQUEST LSART REGISTRATION FORM: lsartvolunteer@gmail.com or tundraleap@msn.com

8/17/07, from BETA Team — Once again, we would like to update you about the work BETA is doing in Lebanon. We are currently getting BETA more organized and solid on a long-term basis, through the hiring of an Executive Director. The director already started working on a financial/fundraising plan for BETA but the results of this plan will not show up immediately... We are redoing the website for more efficient online donations. This week is the launch of our sponsorship program in Lebanon which will be the basis for our international sponsorship program. A membership program is also under development to engage the local community and bring about more support... However, we are in a deep financial crisis at the moment with debts towards vets, food, medical suppliers... and even with these new changes, we still face an immediate challenge. We are doing our best to fundraise within the country but this has become almost impossible with the current instability in Lebanon — from the ongoing war in the North, to the upcoming presidential elections, and the drastic drop in tourists because of the war last summer which we are all still recovering from.… People are caring less and less about animals and prefer to help humans instead, and as many decide to leave the country we are left dealing with all the pets they leave behind!
Photos courtesy BETA We have problems mainly with vets and food suppliers who are becoming
more and more impatient and some of them are now refusing to provide
us with food... We ask you to once more assist BETA, if you can help
us in some way to get urgent food for our animals (we are almost out
of cat and dog food) or pay some of the vets’ expenses. You can
help us sustain our mission by:

Vick entered a guilty plea as part of a special deal with federal prosecutors requiring he fully cooperate with the investigation in exchange for a reduced prison sentence. Up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines may also be levied against Vick, but these would likely pale in comparison to the financial losses he will suffer when corporate sponsors permanently end their lucrative endorsement deals with the famous football player. Potentially, the most devastating punishment of all for the disgraced athlete is that he could be banned from the NFL for life under the league's personal conduct policy... 1) Attend the courthouse rally to support the prosecution of Michael
Vick to the fullest extent of the law for his crimes. 2) Prepared online letter campaign: Urge U.S. attorneys to aggressively prosecute Vick http://ga0.org/campaign/prosecutevick/6ns7exr038d8b8?%3E 3) Call 212-450-2000 and urge the NFL to ban Vick
from the league for life under their personal conduct policy. Follow
up with a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell urging the same: ======================================== Vick Pleads GUILTY To Dogfighting
Charges ======================================== Salvation For ANY Of Vick’s Confiscated
Dogs? (Diane Jessup, well known author and founder of “LawDogs” a program that places pit bulls as detection dogs). OK, so chances are pretty good that Vick released the dogs as part of his plea deal. It is now imperative that those who can offer a realistic place for any of these dogs be made known to those who will decide their fate. We all know PETA and the HSUS (well, at least Wayne Pacelle) wants the dogs dead. The easy way out; after all, we all know pit bulls are “expendable” just like Vick thought, right? We must work fast as it is “usual procedure” to kill the dogs right away before there can be public outcry. I can’t speak for BadRap, or Animal Farm Foundation, but LawDogsUSA would like the opportunity to screen dogs for use as narcotics and explosives detection dogs. We do not want to be told “oh, they are no good” by someone with no idea what we’re looking for. I have never received a reply from Wayne Pacelle concerning this issue despite trying to contact him for weeks. We can only save a couple, and then only if they are useful for our program... I ask you to please help in any way to get word to those holding the dogs and in charge of their fate to consider allowing us to screen them.
