5/22/11 — On Standby For Joplin, Missouri Tornado
ON STANDBY FOR ANIMAL AID IN JOPLIN, MO TORNADO: A multiple-vortex EF-5 tornado ripped a wide stretch of Joplin, MO on 5/22/11. Some 700 homes and a hospital were in the storm’s path, with more than 150 dead. Bonnie Morrison, Kinship Circle Disaster Management Director, is in Joplin for assessment. She has spoken to Missouri’s State Emergency Management Agency to offer assistance for animals. The state designated animal NGO, Humane Society of Missouri (HSOM), has a 15-person team on the ground working with Joplin Animal Control at an emergency shelter on Missouri Southern State University campus. So far, guardians are reclaiming animals. Some without means have temporarily surrendered their companions.

Additional volunteers aren’t needed right now. We are accepting standby volunteers, should circumstances change. State your availability to volunteer for Joplin, MO tornado on form.
Please do not self-deploy. In the U.S., an official invitation (MOU) is required to work at the scene of any disaster. IF WE DEPLOY, a Kinship Circle representative will be in touch. We ask for your patience as we are still in Japan for animal victims of the tsunami-earthquake-radiation crisis and working separately with a U.S. government contact on an overseas cruelty situation.
