Floods, quakes, tsunamis and a cyclone overlap six Asia-Pacific nations, leaving millions displaced and countless animals stranded or dead. In this photo, Dr. Nielsen Donato reaches Julia, a frightened dog left behind in Philippine floods. Photo from Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

In photo, Julia is rescued and in the arms of Philippine volunteer Anna Cabrera. Parts of Manila, the Philippine capital, are 6 feet underwater from Typhoon Ketsana (Tropical Storm Ondoy). Six Nations Hit, Millions Displaced In Asia-Pacific Floods, Quake, Tsunami

A typhoon, floods, tsunami and earthquake overlap six Asia-Pacific nations, leaving millions displaced and animals stranded or dead across the Philippines, Samoa and Tonga, Indonesia.

PHILIPPINES: TYPHOON KETSANA (TROPICAL STORM ONDOY)
  • Worst floods in 40 years. Parts of Manila are 6 feet underwater.
  • Hundreds of thousands flee to evacuation centers.
  • Government of Philippines solicits international aid.
  • A coalition of Philippine animal welfare groups do water-land rescue in the wake of Typhoon Ketsana (aka Ondoy) that flooded Manila and surrounding districts.

SAMOA AND TONGA: TSUNAMI
  • A mass earthquake at sea launches South Pacific tsunamis that wash over coastal villages in Samoan Islands.
  • On some islands all medical facilities and water supplies are lost.
  • More than 100 people are killed.

INDONESIA: EARTHQUAKES
  • 9/30/09: A 7.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Padang, Sumatra 400 miles west of Indonesia’s captial, Jakarta.
  • 10/1/09: A second quake further ravages Sumatra.
  • Hundreds of people are killed. Numbers are expected to rise as bodies are removed from rubble.
  • Tens of thousands of people are displaced.
  • Indonesian government issues request for international aid.
  • Best Friends contacts Indonesian NGO ProFauna Indonesia, to attempt to get an animal assessment.
  • Travel to this remote region is complicated by quake damage and congestion of disaster response teams.

ELSEWHERE: CYCLONE PARMA
  • Viet Nam, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Cambodia brace for Tropical Storm Parma.
  • The Philippines expects another hit from Parma, predicted to make landfall as a Cat 4 or 5 (super-cyclone) storm.

PAWS Races To Save Animals In Philippine Floods, While Struggling Themselves

PHILIPPINE ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY (PAWS)
9/30/09 — Battered by Typhoon Ketsana on 9/26/09, the Philippine capital Manila suffers mass floods. Over 200 are dead and thousands of people and animals are displaced. PAWS helps animals while struggling themselves: "After two days trapped without food, PAWS directors Heidi Guzon and Gwen Protasio, with 60 rescued animals under their care, make it to safety.

May Felix, head of PAWS Disaster Relief Team, loses one of her dogs when flash floods overtake her home. The PAWS shelter functions without electricity as an animal evacuation centre. PAWS is close to Marikina, where thousands are trapped in homes with animals. Tents, cages, cat/dog food and batteries are critical."

Animal Welfare Coalition of Philippines Gets Assist From IFAW On Land And Water

ANIMAL WELFARE COALITION(AWC)
10/2/09 — International Fund For Animal Welfare (IFAW) assists Philippine based Animal Welfare Coaltion, with Best Friends Rapid Response Manager Rich Crook on the team, to conduct water and land rescue. In mud-covered Marikina, animals are recovered from rooftops…barely able to cling to slippery surfaces. Teams caravan in military trucks, then by boat and foot to chest-waters where animals are isolated. Some receive food, water and medication in the field, while worst-case animals return with teams to an animal shelter.

With regard to parallel disaster unfolding in Indonesia, IFAW writes: "We’re saddened by loss of life in the Indonesia earthquake. (Best Friends has) been in contact with ProFauna Indonesia, and will do everything possible to help animals in this disaster. However, it’s a logistically difficult situation. Padang, in Sumatra where the earthquake struck, lies 400 miles to the west of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Travel to that region is complicated by earthquake damage itself and the congestion of relief teams. Please keep animals in Sumatra in your thoughts and prayers."
