2. HELP FIND KATRINA DOG THROWN FROM RESCUE BOAT
FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT LADDIE (an 8-yr-old collie) CONTACT: Laddie's owner stayed behind with him during Katrina. When the house flooded they both got into a rescue boat, and the boat operator threw Laddie off. The owner, 54 yrs old, had hurt her back getting into the boat, but she waited for a spot close enough to swim and jumped out to go after him. She has been searching for him ever since. Another lady is helping her, and she contacted me because I have a rescue collie from New Orleans. We exchanged photos and it is not him. Laddie is 8 years old and she has had him since he was 8 weeks. She had lost her husband in the year before Katrina and Laddie slept under her high bed and was her only friend. She has had a stroke since then, but got back to her house just to salvage this picture to help in her search. I want so much to help her. If anyone thinks this may be the same collie or has any other suggestions, I would so appreciate them. I have learned so much from you all but my messages never seem to go through. Perhaps this one will be blessed. Thank you all

RETREAT/WORKSHOP FOR KATRINA ANIMAL RESCUERS Please send feedback, questions, and suggestions to: piapia@adelphia.net Given the tremendous response to the letter I sent to fellow rescuers, I am considering creating a more formal forum for people to share the emotional and mental fallout that many are experiencing. This would be a workshop/retreat, perhaps occurring over 1-2 evenings or 1 full day. The focus would be on the grief and rage still felt, issues of reintegrating to the world around us, ways to cope, ways to garner support, what to do now, how to get help, how to remain effective and so forth. The purpose would be multi- fold: Some presentations would be more academic in nature (e.g. a speaker or 2 who have published on grief and animals), while others would be meditative or have a healing component using art and journaling exercises as tools. There would also be opportunities to share feelings and coping strategies. I am considering doing this in DC/Va area while the HSUS conference is taking place, as many of you will already be traveling to this event (May 31-June 4, 2006). I myself will not be attending the HSUS conference but would work around the hours of it and its locale. You do not need to be attending the HSUS event to participate. Please let me know if this would interest you and if you would be willing to cover costs amounting to somewhere between $65 and $95 per person (depending on amount attending, location, speakers, length of program, etc.). By replying you are not committed to attend. I just need to get some feedback before embarking on such a project. Also, feel free to share thoughts on what would be useful to you and your fellow rescuers. Please send feedback, questions, and suggestions to: piapia@adelphia.net Important Note: This is not therapy and should not be considered as such. While some exercises would certainly be 'therapeutic,' they are not meant to replace actual therapy or the professional services of a psychologist, psychiatrist or other mental health professional. I look forward to hearing from you. In Kinship, Pia Pia Salk is a clinical psychologist and co-founded Animal Rescue New Orleans with Jane Garrison and David Meyer. 6. DEATH-ROW DOG RESCUED FROM JEFFERSON PARISH NEEDS HOME CONTACT: I am circulating photos of a beautiful, friendly dog named "Buddy" that I am fostering. I recently rescued him from euthanization at the hands of the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter in Louisiana. I work with his former owners' daughter. They have a toddler and had brought him to the shelter because they did not want him around the baby. When I found out about this, I told them to go back and get Buddy and I would try to find him a home. When they did return to pick him up, he was already slated to be put down because they have too many dogs and he did not pass their "stress test." Since he's been with me, he has been neutered, up to date on all his shots, bathed and groomed, tested for heartworms (he had none) and put on HW medication. I cannot keep Buddy because I have two big dogs already (and cats), a small home and I work 50 hours a week and travel frequently. Please pass this message along and let everyone know that he is a great companion pet for an elderly person or a family. I cannot recommend him for small children, since I do not know, but he would be great for older children or teenagers. He loves to run and play ball and gets along great with other dogs, so he would do great in a multi-dog household. He looks like a shepherd-chow mix to me but I am not sure. I appreciate you passing this along! Bonnie Baber CONTACT:
7. PAY/LOUISIANA STEPS UP COMMITMENT TO SPAY/NEUTER AID The first project on our schedule is a spay/neuter voucher program that will provide assistance for cats and dogs who are permanent residents of certain households in St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Orleans and Jefferson. For a limited time, all current residents of Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parish will qualify for this program. Hurricane-impacted and low-income residents of Orleans and Jefferson Parish will also be eligible. Caretakers of feral and free-roaming cats within the four-parish area will be invited to use spay/neuter vouchers as part of responsible colony management and TNR efforts. We hope to launch the voucher program in late spring, and are working hard to nail down all the details. We're pleased to be able to add to the important efforts of existing spay/neuter programs, and look forward to working with the animal care, control and welfare community to ensure that our combined efforts result in an increased number of surgeries performed, and a decreased number of animals becoming entering our community shelters and rescue programs. We are very pleased to have the support and participation of the Southeast Louisiana Veterinary Association for this project. This organization represents nearly 200 veterinarians across southeast Louisiana, and has a long history of compassionate service. This project will be funded through a generous grant from the ASPCA. Future projects also planned for 2006 include spay/neuter efforts specifically targeting the feral and free-roaming cat population, and a high-volume, long-term project that will deliver high-quality spay/neuter services for animals in shelters and foster care programs. If you'd like to receive more information about this project as it progresses, or if you would like to learn more about how your shelter or rescue agency may become a voucher distribution partner, just visit the Spay/Louisiana web site to add yourself to our mailing list: http://spaylouisiana.org/mailinglist.html ABOUT SPAY/LOUISIANA - Spay/Louisiana's mission is to help end pet overpopulation in Louisiana by increasing access to high-quality sterilization surgery for cats and dogs that are most likely to add to our state’s homeless pet population. Spay/Louisiana began in 2002, as a grassroots effort to identify spay/neuter and animal care, control and welfare resources across Louisiana. The results of that on-going effort are used to provide referrals to spay/neuter assistance programs across Louisiana, and are published in the Louisiana Animal Welfare Directory.
