UPDATE FROM THE FIELD:
WE STILL DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS TO SUSTAIN ANIMALS WITH FOOD/WATER UNTIL WE CAN CATCH (TRAP) THEM. They are surviving in packs or burrowing under homes, some of which may be bulldozed.

November 2: We rescued an emaciated cat living amid the debris of a destroyed home. This cat was experiencing liver failure by the time we reached her. Sadly, the cat died while in transit to the emergency clinic...

November 7: Three dead cats. Three separate houses. Two of the cats expired on front porches alongside empty food and water bowls. The other was found on a back porch where no food/water were available. These animals did not succumb to hurricane or flood. They died over the past days from STARVATION. Animals do not have access to food scraps in the trash. New Orleans is presently a city without its normal population, and thus without its normal garbage output. Puddles are scarce. It has not rained for over one month. Residents cannot sustain these animals because there are simply not enough residents in New Orleans.

Today, just 24 volunteers comprised our food/water teams—in a city that has thousands of animals in the streets. We currently have more than 3,000 locations in our database where animals have been reported hiding under porches and homes. Please don’t assume someone else will go to help...

Reserve days, weeks—whatever you can—to help New Orleans animals. JUST DO
IT. All of your questions are answered below.


WHO DOES ANIMAL RESCUE NEW ORLEANS NEED?
1.  People to help put out feeding stations.
2.  People to trap dogs/cats.
3.  People to transport rescued animals to Best Friends in Mississippi each evening.
4.  People to transport animals to humane societies.  
In other words, we need people!


HOW LONG WILL YOU BE IN NEW ORLEANS?
We need volunteers THROUGH END OF NOVEMBER INTO DECEMBER, at which time we will assess continued need and update you.

-   Rent a vehicle with room for supplies. Vans and SUVs appreciated.

CAMPING: Bring tent to camp on parking lot/small fenced yard located
alongside property at 1585 Magazine Street.

FEMA TENT: (Premier Camp tent) FEMA campground with cots, laundry, food,
first aid, running water, showers, etc. that volunteers may use.

State you are in town for ANIMAL RESCUE NEW ORLEANS. You must sign in and
sign out of the FEMA tent daily, or we may lose privileges to stay there.

AMENITIES: Battalion Army Base - 5 blocks from Magazine St. NO LODGING, but
volunteers can get 3 meals a day, showers, laundry. The Army’s support
services are behind Convention Center, extreme southern end, next to river.

DIRECTIONS: From Uptown, take Tchoupitoulas St. toward the city.
Take a right on Henderson St. towards the Convention Center.
Henderson is last traffic light before crossing under large bridge over river.
Behind Convention Center runs Port of New Orleans Place where
services are located (although this road is not open to traffic).
Park along Henderson and walk to back of the Convention Center (military
will not let you enter through the Combat Support Hospital).
Mapquest or Google the intersection of Henderson and Convention
Center Blvd., for clear visual of directions.

WHAT DO ARNO VOLUNTEERS DO?
1. FEED AND WATER TEAMS: Responsible for keeping animals alive until they
can be trapped. Does not require any specialized skills...just compassion and will!

2. TRAPPING TEAMS: Animal Control Officers, DVMs, Vet Techs or Individuals
with Experience Trapping Animals. These volunteers are encouraged to spend
at least one week in New Orleans and may submit (air, car rental, or gas)
travel receipts for reimbursement. An estimate of travel expenses is
required for approval.

3. RESCUE TEAMS: Rescue animals described in calls to our dispatch number as
“animals in need.” Teams also comb city to pick up street animals who
approach them without need to trap. Animal handling experience necessary.
