10/29/07, from headcat@neighborhoodcats.org — New York, PORT AUTHORITY REJECTS PUBLIC OUTCRY AND BEGINS EXTERMINATION OF JFK CATS. Despite an avalanche of criticism from thousands of outraged members of the public, the Port Authority of NYand NJ began trapping feral cats at JFK Airport over this past weekend with the plan of exterminating them. Rescuers were barred from feeding or rescuing cats and were threatened with arrest by USDA wildlife officials. In addition, a Port Authority spokesman admitted to the NY Post his agency had lied when telling the public last Friday the cats would all be adopted into good homes. The NYPost confirmed the cats would be put down immediately instead...
PHOTOS: A number of rescue groups have snuck onto airport grounds to feed and spay/neuter the cats, but the Port Authority has been cracking down on them lately. Some groups have rescued kittens from the colony (the pictures above are of two ofthem); the hope is feral kittens will be socialized enough for adoption. http://gothamist.com/2007/10/26/claiming_danger.php CONTACT INFORMATION / TAKE ACTION:
Demand Port Authority suspend the trapping immediately and meet with representatives of the NYC Feral Cat Initiative and the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals to come up with a humane, effective feral cat management plan.

LIE #1: "The cats will all be adopted into good homes."
REFERENCES: THE TRUTH: Feral cats are unadoptable and often put down when brought to shelters, as Port Authority plans to do. Port Authority ADMITTED LYING to the public in the NYPost article, "Frequent Liars", published Saturday, October 27, 2007. LIE #2: "Feeding cats attracts seagulls and birds are an aviation threat." THE TRUTH: Seagulls are at the airport because JFK is NEAR THE OCEAN! And because tons of trash is strewn about airport grounds. There is not enough cat food to attract large numbers of birds and there is no food left anyway when the cats finish eating. Cats hunt birds, they don't attract them. There is ZERO evidence proving a link between the presence of cats at an airport and an aviation risk. DON'T BE GULL-IBLE! LIE #3: "We can achieve a cat-free airport." THE TRUTH: You can't wipe out the presence of feral cats in a 5000 acre area where new, unneutered cats are constantly abandoned or lost and then reproduce, and where food sources are plentiful. Only Trap-Neuter-Return can, over time, reduce numbers. The Port Authority's extermination effort is futile and will only result in new furry faces, not fewer.

Dear Ambassador Lu,
Today, I received the attached photos which were taken during an "Animal Olympics" organized to entertain the National Day holiday crowd at a safari in southwestern China's Chongqing municipality on Monday, October 1, 2007. Yet last year, the Shanghai zoo canceled a similar show that sparked accusations of cruelty from animal welfare groups. With my knowledge of animal behaviour, it is obvious the actions these animals are being forced to perform are extremely contrary to their normal behaviours. They are also surely under constant stress having been removed from their natural environments and denied natural behaviours and their own social groups. And in most cases they would suffer tremendous fear having been subjected to torturous treatments in order to repeatedly perform these absurd, out of character "tricks". I am outraged that, in this day and age, ANY animal should be exploited, be it in your country or mine. Whether it is for our consumption as food or for our mere entertainment, I feel ALL animal exploitation is wrong and a crime against Nature. Animals deserve much more respect than to suffer under such indignities! I hold that all Governments of the world have an implicit duty to educate the general public as to these horrific wrongs, enacting laws and enforcing strong penalties against this man-handling, and to teach compassion and respect for ALL Nature. I appeal to you to carry this message home to China as well. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, (Your Name, Your Country) KINSHIP CIRCLE REFERENCES: 4. UPDATE: The trial has been postponed until Dec. 17, 2007 at which time I believe it will be continued again due to Holidays. Cockfield has been terminated until sentencing. Assuming he'll be found guilty, he won't get his job back. He will never work with animals again. Other officers did not stand there doing nothing, in the reporters' words. It happened so fast Duke was down before anyone could get to him. He was immediately taken to the emergency hospital but he could not be revived. Six of ten officers were close enough to witness the entire thing and turned Cockfield in, which is never done to a superior officer...
CONTACT INFORMATION / TAKE ACTION:ORIGINAL: Sergeant Allen Cockfield of the Miami-Dade Police Department was recently charged with felony animal cruelty charges for allegedly kicking his K-9 partner Duke to death during an obedience training exercise. The reason, according to an anonymous ] witness: Duke barked when he wasn't supposed to, so Cockfield hoisted the four-year-old German shepherd by the leash around his neck and repeatedly kicked him in a fit of rage until he lost consciousness. Duke reportedly died later at a veterinary clinic from injuries sustained during the attack. The Miami-Dade Police Department suspended Cockfield from duty without pay, and opened an internal affairs investigation of his violent actions. After his arrest, Cockfield was released on bail. Miami-Dade police told reporters that Cockfield, a veteran of the force with 27 years experience, is a model officer...and no history of disciplinary problems. However, with more than two decades of K-9 training under his belt, it is possible this is just the first time this loose cannon got caught for abusing an animal.

Farm Sanctuary, in conjunction with Humane Society of the U.S., launched a groundbreaking ballot initiative to outlaw some of the most inhumane farm animal confinement systems in the state: veal crates for baby calves, gestation crates for mother pigs and battery cages for laying hens. On October 1, 2007 citizens throughout the state began a massive effort to gather the 650,000 signatures needed to qualify the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act — www.humanecalifornia.org/ — for placement on the September 2008 California ballot.

Because of this reliance on outdated animal techniques, reliable and relevant information will not be provided and our safety will not be assured. This is URGENT because testing has now started. Huss as the Guardian/Special Master for the 49 dogs forfeited to the United States in the Michael Vick matter. We congratulate Professor Huss and Valparaiso on this appointment. However, in the October 17 press release there is a worrisome sentence: "Some of the dogs may be permanently placed however others may be euthanized to protect the public and other dogs." As you know the team of experts assembled by the ASPCA recommended that 48 of the 49 remaining dogs displayed temperaments which would allow them to be placed in law enforcement sanctuaries or foster care.

WSPA press release: wspa.or.cr/news.asp?newsID=94
CONTACT INFORMATION / TAKE ACTION:This is the translation to the petition (sorry for my English but may be this info is useful): An artist from Costa Rica named Guillermo Vargas, known as Habakkuk, is involved in a big controversy because of the death of a street dog in Exhibit No. 1 shows that took place last August in Managua (Nicaragua). Defenders of animals in Costa Rica learned of his work through a blog yesterday and accused him of cruelty... What we saw in Managua. As part of his presentation, the artist showed to the viewer a street dog weak, sick and hungry tied to the corner of the room. He captured the animal in a poor district of Managua. The dog died the day after the exhibition, as was confirmed to La Nación by Marta Leonor Gonzalez, editor of the cultural supplement of La Prensa in Nicaragua. The exhibition also included, written with dog food, "You are what you read," as well as an audio with the Sandinista anthem, photos and a burner, which burned 175 rocks of crack cocaine and an ounce of marijuana. Habakkuk said yesterday his work was a tribute to Natividad Canda, Nicaraguan who died after being attacked by two dogs in a workshop in Carthage. "I won't say whether it is true or not that the dog died. The important thing was the hypocrisy of people: an animal thus becomes the focus of attention when you put in a place where people go to see art but not when he is on the street died of hunger..." He added: "Nobody came to free the dog nor given food or called the police. Nobody did any thing." When questioned about whether or not fed to the animal, the artist refused to respond... Several advocates of animal rights repudiated the work of Habakkuk, disqualified him as a work of art and suggested the artist be excluded from Bienal centroamericana Honduras 2008, because he will be one of the six representatives of the country. "I was shocked when I see he promotes cruelty to animals in a work of art," said Gina Malavassi, animals defender. Jose Morales, vice president of the Unidad Especial de Protección y Rescate Animal, said, "The dog was tied and without food; I do not understand in what head it is art..."

My name is Joe Koller, an Animal Right Activist in Ghana. I be came an Animal Right Advocate on a visit to London in the UK 2001. I was taken a walk one morning when I came across this group of people protesting against some hunters who hunt fox as a sport. As some one who is coming from Ghana in Africa, I have seen worst things being done to animals, So I was surprise and curious to know what was the motive and the motivation behind the protesters. So...I was briefly educated on a bit of what they stand for. Since then I see things differently.
I came back to Ghana I share my experience in London with some friends. touched about the education I had on the animals... Some of them also decided to be an Animal Right Advocates. In Ghana a lot of people have pet that take care of themselves. There are people who have pets they don't feed, even if they are eating and their pet come around they beat them. Some of the animals end up on the streets searching for food on their own, which some of even starve to death. And to make matters worse this stray animals are being beating also by those people on the streets. As am writing now we have over 729 stray dog and 416 stray cats on the streets... Our name is The Benevolent Society For Animals. We have started building a pound for the stay animals, so far the project is on a hold due to short of funds. We tried raising funds locally but it seem the people are confronted with their own problems. We hear comments like, "Human beings are dying of hunger and you are here talking about animals!" Due to difficulties in raising funds locally we decided to contact you to help us by donating the little you can, to help us realize our dream of getting a pound for these animals. Also if any advice you have for us is welcome.

Liz Nicholas, info@liznicholas.com • Francois Hugo Seal Alert-SA, sasealion@wam.co.za
From sasealion@wam.co.za — Over the years, taking tourists to see the endangered Cape fur seals off Hout Bay has become one of the top ten attractions in the western Cape. Earning for its six big business, exclusive seal-island tour boat operators, millions in annual ticket sales. In the past year, a very special relationship developed between a previously disadvantaged out-of-work fishermen from the local community, who is also alleged to be a known robber of the visiting tourists. Blitz, as he is known, had formed a unique relationship with one very large 300kg bull seal, whom he had befriended and nicknamed Pietie.
CONTACT INFORMATION / TAKE ACTION:In official literature Marine and Coastal Management Officials claim Cape fur seals are extremely dangerous and aggressive. Pietie, the endangered Cape fur seal bull, would wait each morning for Blitz to call him in the harbour water, where upon he would haul out on the quay-side, and proceed to Blitz. For the remainder of the morning, Pietie would allow Blitz to handle him, pull his ears, open his mouth and feed him by hand, to the delight of visiting children and tourists. Pietie even allowed Blitz to sit on his back, to the amusement of the tourists. This bull seal was a permanent fixture on the waterfront. With Blitz, an enterprising local would take advantage of the crowds that gathered by passing a hat around and asking for money "to buy some fish for my seal." It was a unusual relationship that worked for both man and beast... Plans were even underway with the Community Policing Forum, where it was decided to place a fence around the bull seal, where Blitz would be the only one allowed into the fenced area to feed and love his new found seal-friend. Blitz had, thanks to Pietie the seal, finally been able to turn his life around, support his family and earn a honest living. Sadly, officials tasked with protecting this endangered CITES-listed seal species, protected under the Seabirds and Seals Protection Act of 1973, decided to destroy this bull seal by lethal injection. This official from Marine and Coastal Management, is neither qualified as a veterinarian to administer a lethal injection nor is permitted to kill an endangered protected seal without just cause. His actions were therefore illegal. Unfortunately for Pietie the Bull seal, he was just days away from returning to his offshore colony, where he would live-off his accumulated excess weight, to win the right to command an offshore harem of cows and begin his annual mating season. Thereafter he would moult, and in all probability return to a life on the open sea and offshore islands. For the Seals, Francois Hugo Seal Alert-SA , 27-21-790 8774
