9/14/07, from infobrighteyes@hetnet.nl — ALGEMES' CALVES TORMENT ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2007: In Algemesí, Valencia, the "traditional" spectacle of extreme sadism towards innocent animals will be celebrated again, as every year: Many baby calves will be chased down the streets while the rabble stabs them with 6 to 8 cm spears. Witnesses say it is truly heart wrenching to hear their pitiful screams while they get tortured and try hopelessly to hide from the spears. When they are too tired and bleeding on the ground they are finished off with an 80 cm sword, stabbed up to 40 times. Thousands of people participate in this "fiesta" and many very young children witness the torture and massacre.

3. Tried To Bury Horse Alive - Calls/Mail Needed
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Forwarded By: Zelda, zpenzel@nyc.rr.com

BACKGROUND:
9/10/07, Local 6 New, SANFORD, Fla. — A homeowner in Seminole County, Fla., faces possible animal abuse charges over accusations he asked a construction worker to bury his horse in a grave while it was still alive. Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in Sanford Friday after a construction worker called to report that he was asked to use a tractor to dig a hole for a horse on a nearby property. The construction worker said he refused to help the homeowner and called for help after he realized the owner wanted him to bury the horse alive.

"The owner or caregiver of the animal requested that he put dirt on top of the animal while it was still alive," Seminole County sheriff's Lt. Dennis Lemma said. "They saw a horse that was obviously sick, lying in a shallow grave in direct sunlight without food or water. It couldn't get up. It is an alarming situation." Officers snapped several photos of what they believe to be animal abuse and neglect, including several of the animal lying in a shallow grave. Deputies called animal control officers to the house, who then were forced to euthanize the animal, they said. "We believe there was some kind of respiratory problem and colic," Lemma said. The state attorney's office will determine if the owner will be charged with animal neglect, which is a second-degree misdemeanor.

BACKGROUND:
9/15/07, from stu.911@gmail.com — As of August 24, 2007, my dog Stu has been unjustly imprisoned in the pound of Los Angeles Animal Services, 23 months - 8 days, and has been deprived of adequate exercise, human contact, veterinary care, love.

Stu was impounded on Sept. 16, 2005. He still languishes in the shelter today. Despite the Board of Commissioners' unanimous vote on Aug. 27 to move Stu to a private kennel without delay...there he sits. Various excuses have been offered by the Dept. and the City Attorney for the delay. None are acceptable. This delay tactic is just another example of Ed Boks and the City of Los Angeles using the condition of my beloved dog, Stu to wage their personal war against me. I hope I have your support and your action to put pressure on this ridiculous City to move Stu NOW. Jeff, Stu's Dad

6. Alex The Parrot - Master Of Words And Concepts - Dies
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
New York Bird Club, nybirdclub@yahoo.com

BACKGROUND:

9/12/07, Alex the Parrot, By VERLYN KLINKENBORG
— Thinking about animals — and especially thinking about whether animals can think — is like looking at the world through a two-way mirror. There, for example, on the other side of the mirror, is Alex, the famous African Grey parrot who died unexpectedly last week at the age of 31. But looking at Alex, who mastered a surprising vocabulary of words and concepts, the question is always how much of our own reflection we see. picturespacer

PHOTO: WALTHAM, MA (SEPTEMBER 10, 2007) — Alex, the world renowned African Grey parrot made famous by the ground-breaking cognition and communication research conducted by Irene Pepperberg, Ph.D., died at the age of 31 on September 6, 2007. www.alexfoundation.org/

What you make of Dr. Irene Pepperberg's work with Alex depends on whether you think Alex's cognitive presence was real or merely imitative. A truly dispassionate observer might argue that most Grey parrots could probably learn what Alex had learned, but only a microscopic minority of humans could have learned what Alex had to teach.

Most humans are not truly dispassionate observers. We're too invested in the idea of our superiority to understand what an inferior quality it really is. I always wonder how the experiments would go if they were reversed -— if, instead of us trying to teach Alex how to use the English language, Alex were to try teaching us to understand the world as it appears to parrots.

These are bottomless questions, of course. For us, language is everything because we know ourselves in it.

Alex's final words were: "I love you."

There is no doubt that Alex had a keen awareness of the situations in which that sentence is appropriate — that is, at the end of a message at the end of the day. But to say whether Alex loved the human who taught him, we'd have to know if he had a separate conceptual grasp of what love is, which is different from understanding the context in which the word occurs.

By any performative standard — knowing how to use the word properly — Alex loved Dr. Pepperberg. Beyond that, only our intuitions, our sense of who that bird might really be, are useful. And in some ways this is also a judgment we make about loving each other. To wonder what Alex recognized when he recognized words is also to wonder what humans recognize when we recognize words. It was indeed surprising to realize how quickly Alex could take in words and concepts.

Scientifically speaking, the value of this research lies in its specific details about patterns of learning and cognition. Ethically speaking, the value lies in our surprise, our renewed awareness of how little we allow ourselves to expect from the animals around us.

7. Unending Misery For Horses In Serbia
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:

PHOTOS: The suffering, from hunger and neglect, of these Lipice horses is now to be prolonged to death because politicians have no interest in dealing with the humane aspect of this affair.

BACKGROUND:
Freedom for animals • Snezana Milovanovic, president • kontakt@sloboda-za-zivotinje.org • +381 64 168 55 75
www.sloboda-za-zivotinje.org

From info@sloboda-za-zivotinje.org — Serbia Cancels Inspection by Croatian and Serbian Veterinary and Genetic Experts: The horses from Lipice, brought to Serbia by way of Bosnia and Hercegovina in 1991, have been stabled for the past 12 years at the "Bukinac" stud farm near Novi Sad... They should be returned to Croatia. An agreement was reached in Novi Sad on 29.8.2007 at a meeting of Ministers for Agriculture of Serbia and Croatia, Slobodan Milosavljevic and Petar Cobankovic with the owner of the stud farm, Todor Bukinac, where the horses are presently stabled. Minister Milosavljevic and Minister Cobankovic announced a team of veterinarians and genetic specialists appointed by Serbian and Croatian agricultural ministries will visit the farm, record all details, establish number of animals, examine registry books, note number of foals born in Serbia and the horses' health. On the basis of their findings, conditions for the horses' return to the Croatian Republic can be drawn up.

The society "Freedom for Animals" learned the combined team from the ministries was scheduled to visit the stud farm on 10. and 11.9.2007. However this inspection is not being carried out. According to our most recent information the work of this commission was cancelled by the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture. The suffering, from hunger and neglect, of these Lipice horses is now to be prolonged to death because politicians have no interest... Although more than 345 horses were transferred from the Lipice stud farm the total number today is just 79. This number may not even be correct. Two mares 17+ years of age (no. 93 and 100) in Novo Milosevo and one younger (no. 339) in Novo Naselje have died over the last month...

Only when the situation has been examined should the question of financial remuneration, which Bukinac is seeking for stabling these horses since '97, be discussed. Four years ago this question was discussed but no agreement was reached because Bukinac had asked for 300,000 Euro for his services which nobody was prepared to pay.

8. Mitsubishi Supports Bloodsports
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Forwarded By: Linda Furness, linda.furness1@btopenworld.com • Original Message: League Against Cruel Sports, www.league.org.uk

BACKGROUND:
Mitsubishi Motors will make a £15 donation to the Countryside Alliance or the Game Conservancy Trust (GCT) for every one of their members who test drives a Mitusbishi until the end of September.

CONTACT INFORMATION TO PROTEST:
Email Mitsubishi Motors today to voice your objection to its support of the bloodsports industry and let them know you will not buy a Mitsubishi whilst it continues to subsidize slaughter: enquiries@mitsubishi-cars.co.uk

SAMPLE LETTER: From League Against Cruel Sports
Dear Sir/Madam,
I was shocked to learn that Mitsubishi Motors is giving a donation to the Countryside Alliance and Game Conservancy Trust for each member who test drives a Mitsubishi.

In supporting these organisations, Mitsubishi Motors is contributing to the bloodsports industry and I wish to draw your attention to the following facts about the industry:

According to extrapolations from the GCT's own figures over 12,000 animals are trapped, snared, shot, poisoned or clubbed to death every day on shooting estates. It has been reported that between 2001 and 2006, 251 raptors, including five golden eagles, are known to have been deliberately killed in Scotland alone. Much of this bird prey persecution is linked to shooting estates as recent prosecutions have shown. At the start of this year's grouse season the poisoning of the only breeding female golden eagle in the Borders close to a grouse moor sparked international outrage.

In aligning itself with the Countryside Alliance and GCT, Mitsubishi Motors is alienating millions of people who love wildlife and the countryside, but oppose the killing of animals for fun. I will not consider purchasing a Mitsubishi whilst this support of the bloodsports industry continues and I urge Mitsubishi to rethink its involvement with an industry which thrives on slaughter and suffering.

Yours sincerely, [Your name, address, country]

12. Dismiss Charges Against Tammy Grimes (Doogie Case)
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Forwarded By: hesmophoros@yahoo.de • Original Message: Supporters of Tammy Grimes

BACKGROUND:
With recent news of brutal killings of dogs found on NFL Atlanta Falcon's Quarterback Michael Vick's property, we are shocked back the reality of the horrors inflicted upon these chained dogs. During this time of legal conflict and critique of our insufficient animal laws, we are also reminded of the trial of Dogs Deserve Better founder, Tammy Grimes for saving a dying dog's life. One must ask: whom would you convict? Michael Vick for fighting, torturing and killing dogs or Tammy Grimes for saving a dying dog's life when no one else would come forward to help? One of the major differences in these cases, besides the obvious, may be that Tammy Grimes is not asking for forgiveness; she is asking for justice.

Los Angeles farmed animal sanctuary and compassionate living center directed by Farm Sanctuary co-founder Lorri Bauston.

9/13/07, from Lorri Bauston — Animal Acres is writing to APPEAL for your help for the safety of the sanctuary animals. Animal Acres is located in a high fire area, and yesterday, a major fire broke out less than 1/4 mile from the sanctuary. We had already started working on developing an evacuation site, and raised sponsorship funding for one transport trailer. After loading half of the sanctuary animals before the fire was brought under control, it became very clear that we will need to have sufficient vehicles and transport trailers to evacuate ALL of the animals at once. To do this, WE NEED YOUR HELP.

FIRE EVACUATION FUNDING NEEDS:
1. Transport Trailers: We need a minimum of three large transport trailers, and currently, only have one. We are purchasing a 30' trailer & gooseneck hitch ($24,500) and a 16' trailer ($11,000).

2. Evacuation Site: We are setting up an evacuation center with fencing, temporary housing, housing sheds, feeding and watering equipment, and a caregiver trailer so we have access to a SAFE EVACUATION SITE 24/7. The cost of the evacuation site will be approximately $15,000.

FIRE EVACUATION VOLUNTEER NEEDS:
1. We need help SETTING UP THE EVACUATION SITE. If you can help, please come to the sanctuary any Saturday. We are asking volunteers to arrive by 11 a.m. and commit to 3 hours of work so we can carpool to the evacuation area. Volunteers are also needed other days of the week to clear out brush on the Animal Acres property. Please email us the date(s) you can join us: info@animalacres.org

2. We need more volunteers to serve on our EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM. ERT volunteers must commit to evacuation training sessions and/or volunteer for animal health check days to learn to properly move animals and become familiar with the sanctuary animals and property. ERT volunteers also need cell phone and should be able to respond 24/7.

14. Stop the Poisoning of Dogs in Ethiopia
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Renee Kirkpatrick, raaz-k@airmail.net • Kerri Milam, kerrimilam@yahoo.com

BACKGROUND:
Animal rights group shocked at Ethiopia pre-Y2K dog purge
www.metimes.com/storyview.php?StoryID=20070907-115148-5817r
9/7/07, NAIROBI — An animal rights group Friday offered to help Ethiopia develop full-scale animal shelters after it threatened to kill tens of thousands of stray dogs... The Virginia-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) urged Addis Ababa mayor Ato Berhanu Deressa to cancel plans to poison stray dogs before the country enters the third millennium...

...In the letter to Ato Berhanu, PETA said "the plan - in response to a perceived rabies threat - is both cruel and dangerous. "PETA is offering to help Addis Ababa establish a full-service animal shelter that includes a program of compassionate euthanasia by injections of sodium pentobarbital," it said in a statement.

Addis Ababa authorities announced plans to kill tens of thousands of stray dogs, baiting them by using meat laced with strychnine, a poison that causes intense pain and severe convulsions before resulting in death by asphyxiation. "The ill-conceived plan would also result in the unintentional and agonizing deaths of countless other animals, including birds and mammals who might feed on the poisoned dog carcasses," the statement said.

The Ethiopian capital is awaiting tens of thousands of visitors for lavish celebrations, which come seven years after the rest of the world marked the entry into the third millennium.

CONTACT INFORMATION TO PROTEST:
Humane Society International has a form you can send to mayor of Addis Ababa, asking him to implement humane and effective alternatives to controlling the street dog population: https://community.hsus.org/campaign/ethiopia_dogs?rk=ydLEt4F1bV1QW

UPDATE + ADDITIONAL CONTACT INFORMATION TO PROTEST:
9/6/07, from Kerri Milam, kerrimilam@yahoo.com — There is evidence the killing may have started. A few dogs found dead in a busy intersection, one had blood coming out of his mouth. I do not know if they are testing the waters or this is coincidental, but I don't think it was unintentional. We now need to pressure the government before they start a full blown killing spree. One way is to try to get the state department to react. It might be worthwhile contacting the Ethiopian embassies in London, Rome, New Dehli, Frankfurt etc.. If anyone calls the state department, ask for the Ethiopian desk and ask them to intervene. The American Ambassador in Ethiopia is very sympathetic towards The Homeless Animal Protection Society Of Ethiopia. A week and a half ago he visited them with his family. Marijo Gillis has put a call in to the ambassador in Ethiopia. Hopefully she will get to him.

ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
New York Bird Club, nybirdclub@yahoo.com

BACKGROUND:
From nybirdclub@yahoo.com — Please answer this question if you can... Are the awful spikes that people put on windowsills in NYC [to eliminate bird perching] legal or illegal? I had written to the ASPCA about this, but I did not get an answer. I also gave them the address of a building which has these spikes on the sills.

SAMPLE LETTER: From Amanda Prentice, gadove2003@juno.com
Mr. Jeffrey Bezos, Amazon.com, Inc. • 1200 12th Avenue S., Suite 1200 • Seattle, WA 98144

Dear Mr. Bezos,

I'm disgusted to hear a company the caliber of Amazon.com sells Animal Fighting Literature. I bought my copy of "Elephants Cry", "Marley", "The Good, good, pig", and many other family and animal friendly books there.

I'll boycott Amazon until this is abolished. How dare you pander to a criminal, underground, inhumane segment of society? Where are your morals? I love books that are controversial, but I don't condone you selling promotion of animal cruelty to make what? Extra money? Amazon is big enough and rich enough to do without this segment of society's money. I'll drive to other book stores until Amazon stops this permanently. Shame on you.

Sincerely, Amanda Prentice, 12345 Dove Road • Atlanta, GA 30030

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
I'm so very lonely in here
This cage is so small and cold
I have nothing to play with, no one to hold

I long for a friend, some kind of affection
But I get only pain, no kind of protection

I wag my tail as you walk by me
Hoping you'll actually touch me
But you keep on walking; you don't see me

The man in the white coat approaches my cage
He grabs my neck and I scream in fear
His face is red; he is enraged
He hits my face and shouts "Shut up! Come here!"

I am filled with terror and fear

What else can I do?
The man in the white coat and you strap me in the chair
The pain inflicted on me will be too much to bear

I'm shaking and crying and hit again
The man in the white coat picks up a knife
He cuts into my flesh; I'm afraid for my life

I receive not even sedation
As he performs his cruel operation

He's laughing now, he enjoys his work
In his sick mind, the torture's a perk

STOP IT PLEASE STOP IT! It hurts too much!
I try to be quiet, lest I be punched

What else can I do?
I remember my home before this place
There I was loved, played with and KISSED on the face

How did I end up in this torture chamber?
There's no one here now to keep me from danger

Thrown back in my concrete cage in pain
I try to be brave and silent again

You walk by later and I wag my tail
Only slightly this time and I've ceased to wail

What else can I do?
