CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS:
Visit your Assembly Member in his or her district office. Explain to them how important it is for AB 1634 to become state law. It's best to make an appointment first and go as a group. Please contact Michele Egan at Michele@cahealthypets.com for details about how best to visit and make your case, and please let her know so we can track visits. Information sheets are available at: www.cahealthypets.com/

To find your Assembly Member: www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html
If you cannot visit your Assembly Member's office, call AND fax their capitol and district offices!

EVERYONE, WHEREVER YOU LIVE:

2. Forgotten Street Dogs Of India
REPLY DIRECTLY TO:
It's Their Destiny, itd@2kat.netitstheirdestiny.2kat.net/

BACKGROUND:
4/16/07, from itstheirdestiny.2kat.net/ — With the rapid spread of information through the internet, we hear of animal abuse throughout the world on a daily basis. Could this familiarity be why there's so little international reaction to India's dog culls? Maybe it's because we are used to reading about the culling of hundreds of thousands of dogs in China. Or is it perhaps that it's just difficult to accept this could be happening in this predominantly Hindu nation with it's reputation for respecting life? Whatever the reason, the brutal killing of thousands of street dogs in the State of Karnataka, India goes on.

A campaigner in India writes: "Things are still the same, there are protests going on in Bangalore by animal lovers but no luck on stopping the killings, public awareness thru pamphlets is being done which might take sometime to work out, we are a group of animal lovers who are trying our best to stop the killing with no luck favouring our struggle."

Dear Sir,

I was horrified to learn that, unlike other States of India, Karnataka is dealing with the problem of street dogs with a campaign of mass-killings.

Throughout India homeless dogs are commonplace, yet in many States their numbers are being controlled effectively by Animal Birth Control programs. No animal population can grow more than available food permits and when dogs are neutered, vaccinated and returned to their own territory, they prevent other dogs moving in, thus limiting their numbers naturally.

When, as in Karnataka however, ample supplies of food are thrown into the streets by illegal meat sellers, their numbers will obviously increase. By simply killing the dogs you are encouraging the breeding of replacements. Nature abhors a vacuum and you are creating a situation in which the culls will have to be repeated indefinitely.

I urge you instead to catch, neuter and vaccinate the strays of Karnataka, release them back onto the streets, and close down the illegal and unhygienic meat traders that are the real cause of this problem.

India has a reputation throughout the world as a humane country, and its people are renown for their kindness. I beg you not to let this reputation be so tarnished by cruel, inefficient, and easily avoidable methods of animal control.

Yours sincerely, (Name/Country)

3. Dogs Bound And Gagged, To Die In Philippines
REPLY DIRECTLY TO:
Forwarded By: Linda Furness, linda.furness1@btinternet.comRita Fazio, r.e.fazio@worldnet.att.net
Original Message: wolfmanross@sbcglobal.net

BACKGROUND:
Could you sit back and watch while defenseless dogs are bound and gagged and left to suffocate? While they are piled on top of each other and driven to a pitiful fate? These poor wretched creatures cannot fight back against the cruel Philippine traders who tie their mouths and bind their limbs and leave them to a slow and painful death. But you can fight back for them.

Dog

House Bill #2991, www.networkforanimals.org/bill2991.htm, containing punitive new laws is currently before the Philippine Parliament. This bill will crush the economic viability of trading in dog meat if enacted. Our friends in Manila tell us, however, that NETWORK FOR ANIMALS must orchestrate an outcry both internationally and within the Philippines before legislators will act. Hence our message to target ambassadors, www.networkforanimals.org/protest.htm, and appeal for donations www.networkforanimals.org/donate.htm.

TAKE ACTION:

  1. Donate to help the dogs:

  2. Contact your country's Philippine Ambassador now:

    Tell your Philippine Ambassador...
    • I thank the Philippine government for working with Network for Animals to stop illegal trade in dog meat in the Philippines.
    • As Philippine Ambassador, I request you communicate to your government my profound wish that House Bill #2991 is speedily enacted into law.

4. Protest Greyhound Strangulation In Spain

Original Message: viviak@otenet.gr

BACKGROUND:

Dog

4/21/07, from viviak@otenet.gr — People have tried to strangle this poor greyhound, probably because he was no longer useful for the races... But they didn't succeed. The dog has been found in Martos in the Spanish province of Jaen, where he was wandering around for quite a long time, despite his terrible condition. Probably he only stayed alive because a couple fed him. But he was too much afraid to be captured. Finally they succeeded by putting some kind of anesthetic drug in his food. A vet has seen the poor animal but claims that he doubts if the wound will ever heal.

Apparently Martos is the stage of dog races with portable race tracks, backed by the municipality. Also Martos has a 'dog shelter', it's on the same grounds as the local dump of garbage, which fact speaks for itself. In order to stop this terrible abuse of animals, please send a copy of the protest letter to the local authorities, the police and a copy to the press.

5. Pigs Sentenced To 10 More Years Of Cruelty
REPLY DIRECTLY TO:
Forwarded By: Linda Furness, linda.furness1@btinternet.commertens.rosa@skynet.be
Original Message: Animals Australia, enquiries@animalsaustralia.org
View this message online: www.savebabe.com/eupdate/

BACKGROUND:
5/1/07, from enquiries@animalsaustralia.org — On April 20, nine Australian politicians charged with the responsibility of reviewing cruel pig industry practices voted to allow the use of inhumane sow stalls to continue unabated for another decade. These politicians ignored community views, pre-eminent science, international precedents and their ethical responsibilities to provide millions of Australian animals with fair and just governance.

All is not lost. Recently the worlds largest pig producer, US-based Smithfield Foods, announced a voluntary phase out of sow stalls over the next decade. The following week Canada's largest pig producer followed suit. These decisions were not forced by governments; they were forced by community concern. In the US Burger King (Hungry Jacks in Australia) and major supermarkets have listened to consumers and have committed to sourcing free-range products their purchasing power is underpinning the decisions by pig producers to end cruel practices. Change for Australian pigs will be brought about when these powerful companies are made aware that civilised societies will no longer tolerate industrialised animal cruelty.

TAKE ACTION:

  1. Tell McDonald's, Hungry Jack's and Subway whilst Australian politicians don't care about animal cruelty — you do.

6. Stop Aggressive (Illegal) NYC Pigeon Nettings
REPLY DIRECTLY TO:
New York Bird Club, nycompanionbirdclub@yahoo.com

BACKGROUND:
Pigeon nettings in the New York City area are becoming more aggressive and frequent. Netters working in a pair start before sunrise and "work" in all boroughs and perhaps beyond. They have been seen in brand new SUV's, it is a cash only business and they pay no taxes. So this appears to be a lucrative business. Although it is against the law to remove pigeons from their habitat, no one is stopping them. Only the Board of Health can remove pigeons or you need to get a permit from them.

Let people know the following:

  1. Netters are netting in Manhattan and in the five boroughs and beyond. It is a big business and very lucrative, all cash with no taxes being filed.
  2. It's illegal to remove pigeons from their habitat. Only the Board of Health can remove pigeons or a license is needed.
  3. Pigeons are sold to shooting galleries, restaurants. People may eat pigeon meat substituted for quail, squab or even chicken.
Please post all over the internet and DO NOT BE SHY.
  1. Post on all message boards, websites, blogs, groups, etc.
  2. Make up fliers. Tell people netters are forcefully removing pigeons and selling to restaurants. Tell them it is against the law.
Put up fliers in your neighborhood and anywhere...

Call the NYC Board of Health and alert them.

If you see a netting, write down all info and contact the police. Make note if they will not accept your complaint. Write down date, precinct, officer you spoke with, etc. If they will not take your complaint, contact the Civilian Complaint Revue Board. It is your right as a citizen. Shoo away all pigeons. 8. Ask UConn To End Primate Experiments, Permanently
REPLY DIRECTLY TO:
Justin Goodman, justin_goodman@sbcglobal.net

BACKGROUND:
4/24/07, from justin_goodman@sbcglobal.net — Yes, the cruel monkey experiments being conducted by David Waitzman at the University of Connecticut Health Center have been terminated. However, the school has yet to agree to a permanent ban on the use of nonhuman primates in experimentation.

In recognition of World Week for Animals in Labs, and in solidarity with the millions of animals who are suffering as you read this, please take a moment to write, call, or fax the UConn Health Center administration (even if you already have) and let them know you'd like to see this publicly-funded monkey torture ended forever.

SAMPLE LETTER:
from justin_goodman@sbcglobal.net

Dear UCHC Administrators and Board Members:
Thank you for your time. In light of the recent research misconduct uncovered in David Waitzman's nonhuman primate lab and the school's subsequent termination of the protocol, as a Connecticut resident and person who abhors cruelty, I am requesting that the UConn Health Center enact a permanent moratorium on the use of all nonhuman primates in all biomedical research at all University-affiliated facilities and that the University administration guarantee citizens that the new facility in the former FarmTech building, which is currently well-equipped to confine up to 60 more nonhuman primates, will not be used to conduct research on NHPs.

Every area of research in which NHPs have been used provides evidence against its utility. As a forerunner in progressive science, it is the University's obligation to employ ethical, humane research practices. The use of nonhuman primates for experimentation, in any capacity, is a clear violation of this imperative, as their capacity for suffering is undeniable. Furthermore, it is abundantly clear researchers at the Health Center are unable to abide by the most rudimentary animal protection guidelines.

I look forward to the announcement of a positive resolution to this situation.

Sincerely, (Name, Address)

9. Animal Acres Farmed Animal Sanctuary Internship Program
REPLY DIRECTLY TO:
Lorri Bauston, info@laanimalalliance.com

BACKGROUND:
4/19/07, from Lorri Bauston, info@laanimalalliance.com — Animal Acres, the Los Angeles farmed animal sanctuary directed by Farm Sanctuary co-founder Lorri Bauston, is now accepting applications for summer interns.

This special volunteer program offers individuals an opportunity to live and work on the sanctuary, and be a part of an effective rescued, education and advocacy organization for farmed animals.

Interns are involved in all aspects of operating a farmed animal sanctuary - from caring for rescued farmed animals to assisting with administrative and fundraising operations and conducting education tours and special events. The internship is a great opportunity to learn AND make a direct difference for suffering farmed animals.

Internships are open to all individuals age 18 and over. Interns are required to sign up for a one-month internship, and are provided dormitory-style housing on the sanctuary premises. The internship program is limited to two interns per month, so please contact us to schedule a summer internship at Animal Acres.

Original Message: Romula D'Silva, romula9@gmail.com

BACKGROUND:
4/9/07, from romula9@gmail.com — Felix is a primate who is currently incarcerated inside Oxford University and will be used in a series of experiments into brain function. Felix was featured in the BBC2 documentary, 'Monkeys, Rats and Me', shown in November 2006. Imagine being condemned to live your whole life behind bars in a cage that is barely big enough to hold you. Imagine, never being able to see beyond the bars into the natural world that is your birthright, never breathe fresh air, never interact and form relationships with your own kind. In this life, you will be 'trained' to do tricks for a reward, and will be punished if you fail; you will have electrodes implanted deep into your brain through your skull, you will experience years of abuse and then at the end of that abuse you will be put to death. This is the fate that awaits Felix.
