FARMED ANIMALS Agribusiness/Factory Farms, Vegetarian, Vegan... "Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife by the millions in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by the billion and eats them. This in turn kills man by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative, fatal health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, cancer. So then man tortures and kills billions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year sends out cards praying for 'Peace on Earth.'" — C. David Coats |

Horton Hears...A Cow! And so little Whos of Whoville were saved by someone who believed in their right to remain. Their world on a dust speck was clearly in tatters, till Horton proclaimed: "Every voice matters!" Hollywood's "Horton Hears A Who" paints an animated universe strangely like our own... . Specifically, my mind drifted to the cows... One Country's Companion Is Another's Cuisine Red rivulets flow past a cage where he and others huddle in the airless heat. Hands abruptly tug him through metal slats. They bash his head with a pipe and shove an electric prod against him. He is a carcass, but awake, dunked in boiling water and blowtorched. Finally, everything goes black... Toxic Mix: Animal Factories & Mother Earth The stinky stuff is annually stockpiled in football-field length lagoons across Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, Illinois and other states. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) expel 130 times as much fecal matter as the entire population. Other than the preschool set, no one is giggling over this much poop... When Animals Suffer, So Do We By Kelly Overton — Do the animal rights nuts know something we don't? As we observe the growing number of avian flu cases worldwide, bide time until the eventual large-scale outbreak of mad cow disease in the United States and hope what the world experienced in 2004 wasn't just a dress rehearsal for SARS... Meat-On-A-Stick For Earth Day? Dawn's mist dances over green, rousing the distinct fragrance of renewal. As my husband and I haul Kinship Circle materials across the grounds of Earth Day 2003, we pass other booths that retrace humankind's havoc upon the environment. Various displays promise to restore Earth's treasured remains through recycling... Paradoxical Burgers For Lunch Anyone? Felines beware: Laura Manning bakes cats. That's right. The Syracuse, NY woman is charged with felony aggravated cruelty for fatally roasting her kitten in an oven. Down the coast, Floridian Craig Parrish faces jail time for smashing his 8-week-old puppy against a wall. A Michigan teen who dismembered a stray Lab mix... Violence For Dinner Veal Parmesan. My mom made it and we ate it. For tongues weary of macaroni and cheese, the savory meat dressed in rich sauce promised a dab of grandeur. We hailed our good fortune with swiftly cleaned plates. People purchase veal with limited knowledge about how it got to their platters. This violent byproduct of the... A Life Contained An automated hum defines daybreak inside a sunless barn. Grunts and squeals gradually emerge from narrow stalls arranged in corridors. Each row contains over 100 pigs. All snouts and hooves are aligned symmetrically in a scene of unpiglike uniformity. One 600-pounder wobbles insecurely upon grated flooring... Poultry Pardon 2001 On November 22, Americans will assemble around tables to embrace Thanksgiving 2001, even as loss still resounds from the broken lives buried beneath hate's wreckage. Abraham Lincoln created Thanksgiving as a respite from Civil War strife. In the wake of terrorist attacks that unified humankind, Thanksgiving 2001 will... AR 2001: The PETA/Wendy's Demonstration Veteran activist/author Tom Regan captured the heart of the Animal Rights 2001 National Conference when he asked listeners to envision a single animal. Some saw a hen, incarcerated in a lightless stockade, her frantic eyes gazing over an amputated beak. Others saw a sow crammed into a narrow crate, her brief... Mad Cow For Dinner? In 1996, Howard Lyman bad-mouthed beef on the Oprah Winfrey show. The former cattle rancher and author of Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth From The Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat, explained how dead cows, sheep, pigs and goats were routinely pulverized into feed for live animals. Cows eating cows, a sort of... Our Vegan Sons & Daughters As a vegetarian, I encounter a lot of misconceptions. I'm a protein-deprived "bunny-hugger" who shuns materialism and doesn't shave bodily hair. Puh-lease. I grew up in the seventies, a middle class brat who mall-hopped along the asphalt straits of suburbia. I do not find meat repulsive. In fact, Mom's broiled pork... Sad Byproducts Of The Dairy Industry I did not comprehend what I'd seen. As my husband and I traveled East on Highway 39-A just outside the town of Perry, New York, we saw rows of neatly arranged "dog house" structures. Outside each, a chained creature struggled to stand upon wobbly legs. "Oh my God," I whispered. "We just passed a puppy mill..." A Vegan Wedding The Farm Sanctuary wedding of Brenda Suzanne Shoss and Dr. Graydon Lee Ballard, III began as an argument one year ago. "We'll never set a date at this rate," I'd said to my procrastinating fiance. "If you could get married anywhere in the world, where would it be?" he'd asked with the urgency of a snail... Downed On The Farm On the idyllic family farm, animals roam freely and engage in natural behaviors. Hollywood depicts lovable critters who live comfortably until the day of their humane slaughter. "Babe" and "Chicken Run" are a far cry from today's corporate farms... A Visit To The "Killing Floor" by Matt Halferty A couple of months ago, I had the chance to visit a slaughterhouse with some friends. We woke up very early and tried to get to the Tarpoof Packaging Plant before the lunch beak which begins at 9:00 am. When we parked outside you could hear the screams... |
