The Multi-Billion Dollar Lie: Animal Experimentation THE MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR LIE does not overwhelm you with gruesome images. The film arms you with facts and tactics to argue for hastened development of animal- free research. Medical progress — real cures for human conditions — will quicken when industry and cultural mindsets change. While existing non-animal tools are used, the technology needs funding to evolve. Biotechnology has undergone rapid transformation in recent years. Continuing breakthroughs can eventually delete the flawed animal model altogether. The question is, how quickly can we get there?

Bottom line: If data from animals artificially induced with human disease/injury is non-predictive, with potential to mislead experimenters with false conclusions — we can and should try harder to replace it.

If animal experimentation is, at best, of "questionable relevance" (Robinson, et al., 2001; Schardein, 2000; Cohen, 2002 & 2004; Haseman, et al., 1998), do we accept cruelty that exceeds any other by virtue of its methodical execution? Forget whether the victim is a human or nonhuman animal. No medical degree is required to recognize systematic infliction of pain and suffering as indefensible. Those who contest this simple truth either won’t look or lack the human mechanism for empathy.

  • National Institutes of Health will spend some $12-18 billion taxpayer dollars on redundant animal experiments at medical universities seeking grants.

  • 47 of 53 landmark animal findings cannot even be reproduced. "It was shocking. Pharmaceutical industry relies on these studies for drug development." Failure is blamed on use of animal models, irrelevant to cancers or other disease, in an academic setting that fosters poor science, even fraud, as researchers compete for funding. ARAVA: Tests safe in animals. Tied to 22 human deaths in rheumatoid arthritis users.
VIOXX, CELEBRAX, BEXTRA: Up heart disease risk in humans, despite years of animal testing.
PREMARIN, PREMPRO: HRT from pregnant-mare urine ups risk for coronary heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, pulmonary embolism, endometrial cancer, colorectal cancer, hip fracture, death.
BAYCOL, MERIDIA, SERZONE, FENPHEN: Pulled or restricted after animal testers approved them.
AMRINONE: Shows promise in mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs, rhesus monkeys. The cardiac drug kills some people.
ISUPREL: Dosing derived from animal tests. 3,500 asthmatics in Great Britain die.
ETC… All these drugs tested safe for people in animal experiments.

ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS (ADRs)

  • Approved drugs harm 2 million people a year.

Where is public outcry over research fraud, like the outcry over tobacco industry fraud? WARNING: Animal research may cause adverse drug reaction, disability or death in humans.

When I think about what goes on under the radar inside research labs, I just feel so angry, so sad. And if I can just get even ONE more person to see what I see, know what I know. And then that one person becomes another, and another and another, until we are the majority who try to expose one of the most corrupt industries of all.

But I also realize the animal research industry is a form of ACCEPTED CRUELTY. A sort of SACRED COW that society believes must occur for the greater good. For example, we must experiment on animals to find cures for cancer, AIDS and other human disease. To save children. And to advance medical science.

But that’s not even true. And all the data to confirm the failure of the animal model is right there, in quotes from the research industry itself — which is the only we should look to argue on behalf of animal- free research methods.

There is no animal experiment that can confirm safety for human use of drugs, vaccines or other compounds. Because no animal can produce clinical symptoms — or even metabolize a drug in the same way — that are relevant to human disease, wounds or trauma. All animal experiments mislead researchers with false conclusions that can ultimately hurt people.

  • MISLEADING: The animal model presumes a harmful effect in one species will occur in another. Science itself accepts that genetic, metabolic, biochemical, anatomic, physiological and psychological traits vary significantly between species.
