Senseless Cruelty To Cats
Why drive plastic tubes down cats' throats, or practice any medical drills on them, given accessibility to high-
fidelity simulators? Ask University
of Virginia to use its sophisticated medical simulation facility only for pediatric residency labs. With so
many animal-free tools, it
is cruel to reduce any life to isolation, pain and death.

Dear University of Virginia President Sullivan and Pediatrics Department Faculty:
I respectfully ask the University of Virginia (UVA) to modernize its pediatrics residency program with
animal-free instruction, alone.
Please utilize UVA’s sophisticated medical simulation facility in place of cats and other live
animals.
It is senseless to force plastic tubes into the windpipes of cats for intubation drills – or
practice any medical procedures on them – given availability of high-fidelity simulators such as
Laerdal’s SimNewB, Gaumard’s Premie HAL and PREMIE Blue, and
METI’s SimBaby.
In fact, human-focused simulators better replicate a newborn’s airway, and thus, impart skills
more relevant to human anatomy.
Animal-free models can also be used repeatedly, thereby cutting cost.
At present, 94 percent of U.S. pediatrics residency programs exclusively rely upon human-related systems
in place of cats, ferrets, pigs,
dogs, goats and other animals. Please eliminate live animals from UVA pediatrics labs and all training
curricula.
With so many advanced animal-free tools, it is simply cruel to reduce any life to isolation, pain and
death.
Thank you,
