WIN ›  Obama Signs Animal Crush Video Act Into Law

THIS ALERT IS CLOSED. It is archived for a letter-writing example or background research.

IN CRUSH VIDEOS, PEOPLE IN SHARP HEELS CRUSH SMALL ANIMALS TO DEATH
12/9/10 Thanks to the perseverance of Kinship Circle members and animal advocacy groups nationwide, H.R. 5566 the Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act of 2010 is now law. The victory snubs a 4/20/10 Supreme Court ruling that protected crush fetish videos as free speech. The U.S. vs. Stevens edict focused on depiction rather than animal abuse. Crush videos typically portray high-heeled feet stomping rabbits, puppies, kittens, mice and other small animals to death. The new law directly bars production, sale and circulation of torture videos that depict animals crushed, drowned, suffocated, stabbed or burned.

  • 12/9/10: H.R. 5566 becomes law with President Obamas signature!
  • 11/19/10: U.S. Senate unanimously agrees to House version H.R. 5566, passed 11/15/10. Crush Videos Act has full Congressional approval.
  • 7/21/10: U.S. House of Representatives passes H.R. 5566, Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act of 2010.

Honorable Representative
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20510

Honorable Senators
The U.S. Senate
U.S. Capitol Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Lawmakers,

I am pleased to learn the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 5566, the Prevention of Interstate Commerce in Animal Crush Videos Act of 2010. I now ask the U.S. Senate to ensure this bill becomes law. Please cosponsor and support a companion Crush Videos Act of 2010.

Some 262 Reps signed on as H.R. 5566 cosponsors. I am counting on my Senators to pass similar legislation before the 111th legislative session ends on January 3, 2011.

The House's 416-3 vote is a decisive snub of a 4/20/10 Supreme Court ruling that facilitates animal torture in crush fetish videos. The U.S. vs. Stevens edict focuses on depiction, rather than actual abuse. It deems the 1999 Crush Act unconstitutional and vague. Thus portrayals of high-heeled feet stomping small animals to death are protected as free speech.

The fatal mutilation of puppies, kittens, rodents and other creatures should not masquerade as entertainment or fall under First Amendment rights. These defenseless animals suffer unbearably while crushed and dismembered.

H.R. 5566 enforces a ban on the sale and circulation of animals shown crushed, drowned, stabbed or burned. The bills language is crafted to survive future First Amendment challenges. I urge the Senate to follow suit with an equally strong bill that puts crush fetish videos out of business.

Sincerely,
