spacer Take Jenny Off Display And On To Freedom
Jenny, the 31-year-old African elephant, will move to the Africam Safari Park located 80 miles southeast of Mexico City, zoo officials said today, Dallas News. Ask authorities to instead retire Jenny to an accredited sanctuary where she can roam with other elephants in a natural habitat.

Dear Mayor Leppert, Councilors, and Mr. Hudson:

I am extremely upset that city officials and the Dallas Zoo are set to retire African elephant Jenny, 31, to Africam Safari Park in Puebla, Mexico. Please send Jenny to an accredited sanctuary where she can roam with other elephants in a natural habitat.

Since the May death of Jenny's longtime companion Keke, 39, concerned citizens have rallied the zoo to relocate Jenny to a U.S. sanctuary. The 2700-acre Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee offers a 300-acre range for Jenny to wander with three other African elephants. California's PAWS Sanctuary provides hundreds of acres. Both are state of the art, acclaimed facilities.

At Africam Safari Park, on the other hand, Jenny would share a 4.9-acre space. She'd live an abbreviated life, constantly on display, without adequate space, exercise or social enrichment. Moreover, American welfare and anti-cruelty laws won't safeguard Jenny in Mexico. Why would the Dallas Zoo move Jenny to a foreign amusement park that can't possibly fulfill her physical and psychological needs particularly when a nearby sanctuary with ample room would welcome her?

At age two, Jenny was forcibly separated from her mother in Africa. She endured another seven years of harsh training. During her 22 years at the Dallas Zoo, she was sometimes unable to cope with captivity. Zoo handlers gave her Acepromazine, a tranquilizer, from 1996 to 2001 to ease Jenny's aggressive and self-mutilating behavior.

She deserves respite from captivity, where elephants usually die decades earlier than their estimated 60 or more years in the wild. I urge you to take immediate steps to arrange Jenny's transfer to a refuge where she can forage on fresh plants and express natural instincts among fellow elephants.

Please let Jenny savor relative freedom in open space and organic terrain. An amusement park, even if AZA accredited, is not in her best interest.

Thank you,
