MICHAEL VICK DOGFIGHT CASE UPDATES:
- In Federal Court, Vick Is Sentenced To 23 Months Behind Bars
- The Lives Of 47 Surviving Dogs Are Spared
- In Virginia State Court, Vick Gets 3-Year Suspended Prison Term
Kinship Circle followed the Michael Vick dogfighting case from its inception through federal and state prosecutions, with alerts to demand
maximum penalties for Vick and his co-defendants charged with operation of a dogfight ring, Bad Newz Kennels. In an action
campaign
about the fate of Vicks surviving dogs, we implored the U.S. Attorney's Office of Eastern District of Virginia and later the court
appointed Guardian-Special Master of the dogs, Professor Rebecca J. Huss of Valparaiso University School of Law to spare their lives. In the
end, 47 pit bulls were divided among 8 rescue groups for rehabilitation and potential adoption.
Michael Vick pled guilty to a state dogfighting charge in a Virginia courtroom. Under plea agreement, the Falcons quarterback received a
3-year
suspended prison term and $2,500 fine on charges of attending, sponsoring and participating in dog fights. A cruelty to animals with prejudice
charge was dismissed. Vick also received 4 years probation. State charges against Vick carried a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Vick, currently serving a 23-month federal sentence on felony charges related to dogfighting, is scheduled for release from federal prison July
20, 2009. With his state case completed, he is eligible to participate in the Federal Bureau of Prisons re-entry program. The program could
include an early release and a stay at a halfway house for up to 6 months.

*****THIS ALERT IS NO LONGER ACTIVE*****
DO NOT SEND THIS ALERT!
Gentlemen,
I thank the U.S. Attorney's Office for its promise to not return about 50 pit bulls seized from Michael Vick's dogfighting compound to a
similar setting.
Now that these unfortunate dogs find themselves "property of the United States," I respectfully ask the United States to do the right thing. I
urge you weigh expert opinion from ASPCA behavioral specialists in conjunction with the hands-on experience of Best Friends Animal Society in
Utah, Animal Care Foundation of Hawaii, and Mariah's Promise in Colorado at least three first-rate sanctuaries that have offered to care for
some of the dogs.
Diane Jessup, well known author and founder of LawDogsUSA (a program that trains pit bulls as detection dogs) has also expressed interest
in screening Vick's confiscated dogs for use as narcotics and explosives detection dogs. Jessup has worked with pit bulls from all walks of life.
There can be salvation for some, if not all of these dogs.
As the animals are evaluated over the next several weeks, I hope you will consider the trauma they've endured and measure their ability to be
rehabilitated with some lenience. Sadly, millions of animals who need rescue languish in our nation's shelters everyday. But Vick's dogs have
stolen our hearts and come to represent the worst in human brutality.
Now, the best in human kindness want to rehabilitate these dogs not to adopt them into homes but to give them a place to feel safe and
loved. I sincerely hope the U.S. Attorney's Office, and ultimately the U.S. District Court Judge in Richmond, afford them this chance.
Thank you,

When you use the web petition instead of direct-send, your comments — and everyone else's — come from one place: Our website server.
WEB PETITIONS REQUIRE THE LEAST EFFORT, BUT SOMETIMES CAN:
- Create a spam effect that angers recipients and hurts outcome for animals.
- Compel recipients to block the entire petition, so no one's comments get through.
