spacer WILD ANIMALS DON'T BELONG IN SUBSTANDARD ROADSIDE ZOOS
A woman recently mauled at a British Columbia roadside zoo illuminates the tragic consequences of confining tigers or lions, black bears, wolves, beavers, monkeys and other wild animals at substandard exhibits. In both B.C. and Ontario, residents may collect exotic wildlife without a license. Days after the B.C. mauling, Ontario Provincial Police announced an adult macaque had escaped from a roadside zoo. An estimated 80-90% of adult macaques carry the herpes B virus, which can cause life- threatening brain disease in humans. Wild animals do not belong in barren, rickety enclosures without room to move, much less run or play. Exotic animals on display wind up depressed, sick or wounded. Many develop psychotic behaviors such as pacing, head bobbing and self-mutilation. Roadside zoo employees are typically inexperienced. Facilities are rundown and hazardous. Many sell unwanted exotics to canned hunt ranches or the underground trade in meat, parts and skins. Ask officials to prioritize licensing and rule enforcement, to prevent future tragedies for both animals and people.

Honorable Officials,

The May 10th mauling of a woman at a British Columbia roadside zoo illuminates the tragic consequences of confining tigers or lions, black bears, wolves, beavers, monkeys and other wild animals at substandard exhibits notorious for animal cruelty. This fatality prompted B.C. officials to reevaluate their oversight of zoos. In both B.C. and Ontario, residents may collect and cage exotic wildlife without a license.

Only days after the mauling in B.C., Ontario Provincial Police publicly announced the escape of an adult macaque from a roadside zoo in Picton, Ontario. Clearly, weak zoo regulations fail to protect the public. An estimated 80-90% of adult macaques carry the herpes B virus, which can cause life-threatening brain disease in humans.

Ontario outnumbers other provinces in roadside zoos and thus needs to responsibly address licensing and rules. I respectfully ask you to investigate and penalize unscrupulous zoos and close operations that violate animal welfare and public safety laws.

Wild animals do not belong in barren, rickety enclosures without room to move, much less run or play. Exotic animals on display are denied their natural instinct to seek mates, raise young, hunt and roam. Most wind up depressed, sick or wounded. Many develop psychotic behaviors such as pacing, head bobbing and self-mutilation. Roadside zoo employees are typically inexperienced. Facilities are rundown and hazardous.

Roadside zoos routinely fail to comply with caging laws or provide adequate nourishment, exercise and veterinary care. Many sell unwanted exotics to canned hunt ranches or the underground trade in meat, parts and skins. Please make zoo licensing and enforced rules a priority, to prevent future tragedies and reduce animal suffering.

Thank you,

about web petitions
When you use the web petition instead of direct-send, your comments — and everyone else's — come from one place: Our website server.

WEB PETITIONS REQUIRE THE LEAST EFFORT, BUT SOMETIMES CAN:
  • Create a spam effect that angers recipients and hurts outcome for animals.
  • Compel recipients to block the entire petition, so no one's comments get through.
